Not only is Agent Peggy Carter coming back for a second season, her team is hopping across the country, from New York City to Los Angeles. (That is quite the hop, show.) With that comes new intrigue. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel’s Agent Carter is going to be bigger, better, and even more beautiful in its second season.

Here are a few reasons why you should watch the premiere on January 19!

There will be some new characters.

LA power couple, actress Whitney Frost and her senatorial candidate husband Calvin Chadwick, will bring some Los Angeles flavor and new intrigue into the storyline. Frost (Wynn Everett) was inspired in part by screen legend and inventor Hedy Lamarr, according to show runners. She’s beautiful, powerful, incredibly brilliant, and perhaps her climb to the top might be hiding some sort of secret. Perhaps that she’s Madame Masque? It’s not really a secret. That’s who she is. But won’t that reveal be fascinating?

Also joining the cast is Reggie Austin (Pretty Little Liars) as Jason Wilkes, the crime fighting team’s resident scientist. During Marvel’s Agent Carter, quite a few fans of the show took to the Internet to talk about the lack of diversity in the cast—even Hayley Atwell herself addressed the problem. It seems that Jason Wilkes, an African American scientist, is Marvel’s answer to the fans. His struggle to get where he is parallels Peggy’s in some ways. He’s a black man fighting the inherent racism of that time period to become a top scientist, just as Peggy deals with discrimination as a woman in the SSR. According to Reggie Austin, they form a special bond throughout the season because of it.

Here’s something else to look forward to. Dottie Underwood, or Black Widow, as she was revealed to be later on in season one, is coming back. The Soviet trained assassin who was one of Peggy’s neighbors at the woman’s hotel alluded capture and disappeared in the finale—but apparently, not for long. She has followed Agent Carter to Los Angeles, and according to Atwell, Dottie (brilliantly played by Bridget Regan of Legend of the Seeker and Jane the Virgin fame) and Peggy will be butting heads much more often in this season. Of her scenes with Regan, Atwell said, “This is a different relationship. In some ways, without spoiling everything, I need her. And also, I get to have scenes with her, which are like a chess game. […]a lot of the scenes between us are, they’re filled with subtext. And on the surface she’s got this very soft spoken, elegant voice. And yet, you know that she’s an assassin, and it’s a very potent mix.” All I have to say about this is that I can already feel the sexual tension. I cannot wait for this!

The show runners also spoke about including elements from the comic books in this season. On top of the Los Angeles scenery that gets to be used much more now that they aren’t pretending to be in NYC, the show will be including Marvel “Easter eggs” and fun science fiction elements that were in the comics. Area 51 is practically Los Angeles’ neighbor, so you know that will have some influence in the storyline. And don’t forget, the late 1940s into the 1950s was when scientific exploration and experimentation really gained momentum with the government, with the general public, and in Hollywood. Show runners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters spoke of including the Dark Force, which will be known as Zero Matter in the early stages of its discovery. Butters added, “Certainly with Dark Force, it touches on Dr. Strange.”

Oh, boy! Madame Masque, Black Widow, Dark Force, Dr. Strange! This is going to be quite the season!

Don’t miss the 2-hour premiere of Marvel’s Agent Carter tonight on ABC at 9pm!
