Welcome to Night Vale Creators Announce Book Deal, Voice Actor Change

Have you been keeping up with Welcome to Night Vale? Because the sheriff’s secret police has been keeping up with you.

In case you aren’t up on your latest Night Vale news, creators Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink recently shared the show is to become a book in the near future. Appropriately, the announcement was made on an episode of the popular podcast.

Publisher Harper Perennial will release a novel based on the funny-scary series as a hardcover in 2015. It will feature the characters listeners have come to know and love like Cecil and Carlos, as well as the rest of the bizarre Night Vale gang.

But before that can come to fruition, a change in casting is in order. Since its inception, Welcome to Night Vale has made a point to be inclusive of all people regardless of gender, sexuality, or even species.  Because of this, a new actor will soon voice Carlos. In case you are unaware, Cranor is the current voice of the scientist, but that soon won’t be the case anymore. In a post on his Tumblr, Cranor said:

“It sucks that there’s a white straight male (me), playing a gay man of color (Carlos). Look, I know it’s a voiceover, but it’s not just that. We do live stage shows, and that’s a visible role for a [person of color]. Plus, fans often [G]oogle the actors who play each character, and what does a Latino/Latina teen think when my face might pop up (or worse, no image pops up) as the actor playing Carlos? What am I doing voicing this major character when there are so many talented, gay, Latino or Hispanic men who can/should be doing it? Why didn’t I think of all of this before ep 16? I don’t know. But here I am: standing in the way of an actor of color getting paid acting work, and I don’t want to do that since I am neither a PoC nor an actor.”

With this re-casting, they hope to increase the visibility and representation of people of color in the media and prove inclusion does not detract from storylines in genre writing.

The episode featuring New Carlos is being recorded today and will be released early 2014.

Are you a Welcome to Night Vale fan? What do you think of all of this news?
