Weekly Nerd News: November 25

Have you fallen behind on your nerd news? Don’t worry; we’re here to help! Here are a few stories to bring up at the water cooler this week:

After months and months of circulating rumors, it’s finally official – Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen have joined Avengers: Age of Ultron. They will play sibling superheroes Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. The movie will bring together Marvel’s biggest heroes to fight their scariest foe yet (who will be played by James Spader) and comes out May 1, 2015.

After backlash that plagued it since it was announced, the Xbox One was finally released and has become Microsoft’s biggest console launch yet. In less than a day, it sold more than one million units across 13 markets. It is sold out nearly everywhere and Microsoft is working hard to restock them around the country as fast as they can.

Unsurprisingly, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire pulled in huge numbers at the box office during its opening weekend. Globally, it made $307.7 million, easily outdoing the first movie’s $211.8 million debut. In North America, it made $161.1 million, beating the record previously set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and became the fourth biggest opening of all time.

Did you watch the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special this weekend? Be sure to check out our review of the episode! Its premiere became the Guinness World Record holder for largest ever simulcast of a TV drama after airing in 94 countries and 6 continents at the same time. The award was presented to executive producer Steven Moffat at the Doctor Who Celebration, a three-day event spanning the series’ anniversary weekend in London, where Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman were also present.

Following Disney’s lead with their Marvel properties, Sony is looking to build a multi-character universe around Spider-Man. They are looking to spin off characters and villains in his world, with Venom rumored to be the first in the lineup. Past Spider-man movies have made over $3 billion, so it’s easy to see why the studio would want to expand the universe. But before all of that can come to fruition, the next film in the original series, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will be released May 2, 2014.

Game of Thrones is a massive hit, so it’s surprising this hasn’t happened before now – this being a game based on the series. While it’s just a rumor for now, multiple sources are saying Telltale Games would be the studio behind the game. It’s unclear whether the game would be based on the HBO series titled Game of Thrones or the book series the show is based on, which is actually called A Song of Ice and Fire with the first book in the series called A Game of Thrones.
