Weekly Nerd News: April 30

Have you fallen behind on your nerd news? Don’t worry; we’re here to help! Here are a few stories to bring up at the water cooler this week:
Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in Captain America, recently teased she worked on a one-shot possibly featuring her character. At the Iron Man 3 premiere, Marvel co-president Louis D’Esposito confirmed he just directed a one-shot focusing on a “strong female character” that would premiere at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Though he didn’t flat-out say it was about Peggy, it would be safe to assume it’s about her, who was revealed to still be alive in present day in deleted scenes for The Avengers.
Iron Man 3 has already been released overseas (it will come out in America this Friday) and is already surpassing The Avengers‘ box office numbers. Over the weekend, it made $195.3 million to The Avengers’ $185.1 million. Despite that success, Gwyneth Paltrow stated at the movie’s premiere she thinks she and Robert Downey, Jr., are done with the franchise. Their contracts are both up for re-negotiation, though Downey will definitely be seen in The Avengers 2, likely to begin filming in February.
Also teasing Avengers news at the premiere was Joss Whedon. Though he has been known to be coy with fans, he told Yahoo! Movies he is looking to bring his two favorite characters, a brother-sister act, in for the sequel. Many outlets are now speculating the duo to be Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Marvel co-owns the rights to the characters with Fox, so their appearance in the film would be a realistic conclusion to draw.
Nintendo recently revealed the newest member in the Mario Party franchise. Though it doesn’t have an official title yet, the game is coming to the 3DS this winter. Like the other games in the series, board and mini-games will be featured, but in the new version, players have seven game boards to choose from, each offering different gameplay challenges. Nintendo also said AR Cards and SpotPass will be supported.
Disnerds, this one’s for you: Disney and Sega have announced the release of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. It will be a complete re-imaging of the original side-scrolling Castle of Illusion first released on the Genesis in 1990. In the new game, players will help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch Mizrabel. It will be available for digital download on the Xbox 360, Playstation, and PC this summer.
Though Nintendo will not hold their traditional press conference at E3 this year, they will be holding multiple Nintendo Direct presentations leading up to the show. Both events will occur June 11, the first day of E3. One will be for business partners and the other will be a booth where they are inviting a small group of media to play their new games. The decision was made after other recent Nintendo Direct presentations, citing them as examples of the company’s new approach, and the fact they are not introducing new hardware, only new software, at the expo.
Have you seen the new Thor 2 trailer yet? The sequel picks up after the events in The Avengers, with Thor and Loki back on Asgard. After being threatened by Malekith and his followers, Thor must turn to his brother for help in defending the Nine Realms. The movie comes out November 8.
