Wear Your Imagination
By Erika Jenko (@erikajenko)
As a child, the act of picking out my clothes that would be worn to school the next, was an act that was set aside for my mother. If I had had it my way, I would’ve worn a tiara or a fork (otherwise known as a dingelhopper) in my hair. Like many other girls around my age, I was a product of the Disney golden age of animated films. At a certain age, your parents start to trust you with being capable of dressing yourself. They know full well that you are a grownup the day you decide to opt for jeans rather than a cape. Thanks to Leslie Kay, the fashionista and brains behind DisneyBound, dressing up like your favorite Disney character just became the cool way of revamping your everyday wardrobe.
DisneyBound started off as a travel blog to document Leslie Kay’s trip to the Magic Kingdom. The blog quickly blew up, and Kay decided to use her blog to explore the realm of Disneys inspired stylings. Her daily posts on tumblr (www.disneybound.tumblr.com) feature complete ensembles that take Disney characters, and uses them as inspiration for outfits. Life is short. Why dress like a normal 20-something-girl, when you can dress like Donald Duck?
The blog prides itself on finding reasonably priced items and clever ways to throw the outfits together. The idea is to emulate characters based on what you have in your closet, as opposed to spending your next paycheck on everyday cosplay. Wanna dress like Snow White for that big corporate meeting so that you feel so good about yourself that you could sing (by a wishing well, of course)? It’s as simple as wearing a yellow skirt, blue blouse and a red bow in your hair.
Kay has started up a trend that everyone can take part in and have fun with. So why hasn’t something so simple not happened sooner? At a certain age, the lovers of Disney animated films were expected to grow up. We stared the ticking croc in the face, and chose clothes with less pixie dust. Leslie Kay is unique in the sense that unlike everyone else, she saw the ticking croc but decided to fly off to Neverland anyway.
Kay has started a movement. DisneyBound is no longer just a blog. It’s a ‘phrase.’ Go out there and ‘DisneyBound!’ She has followers all over the country following suit and playing makebelieve with their wardrobe.
