What is Versus? Versus is a 26 Character Single Elimination Bracket. We will feature a new pairing each week till we reach the ultimate champion!
Though the many Crises in DC comics over the years have changed the details of his story, Plastic Man’s story always bounces back to look just about the same. Patrick “Eel” O’Brian was a crook who was shot by a security guard and exposed to unidentified chemicals that once introduced to his bloodstream, changed his physiology dramatically, giving him the powers and abilities of a plastic man.
Stretching, malleability, size-changing, density control – Plastic Man can re-form his body into any shape he chooses, and control his size and density as well. He can make himself as large as a building or small as a mouse, and choose to be hard as a rock or fluid like a liquid. Invulnerability, regeneration, and immortality – Plastic Man’s body is no longer harmed by anything. Batman once said that Plastic Man could withstand nuclear detonation. Likewise, his mind is immune to telepathy.
Color changing – Changing shape is no problem, but changing color is only possible with intense concentration. In some stories, Plastic Man has been vulnerable to fire or chemicals. Rapid temperature change has also been shown to defeat Plastic Man.
Plastic Man’s origin is about survival – He overcomes his criminal past to become a hero. During the JLA Obsidian Age story arc, Plastic Man was found dispersed into separate molecules at the bottom of the ocean for 3000 years. He reassembled himself and carried on as a 3000 year old hero.
Reed Richards was a child prodigy and graduated college with multiple science degrees at an early age. As a government contractor working on an experimental spacecraft, Reed and his best friend Ben Grimm launched the craft into space with his girlfriend and her brother (Susan and Johnny Storm) aboard. The spacecraft’s shielding as insufficient to withstand the cosmic rays they encountered, and this radiation caused each member of this voyage to gain wild abilities as they returned to Earth. Reed found that his body was now stretchable and malleable into many forms.
While he cannot change his density and size to the degree that Plastic Man can, he has shown some ability to do so. Perhaps the most important power that Reed’s elasticity has afforded him is his expanded intellect. Due to his powers, Reed has gone from an already exceptional genius to being the most intelligent human in the Marvel Universe. Due to his vast intellect, Reed has created vast amounts of new technologies. It is through the sale and licensure of these technologies that Reed finances the Fantastic Four and the Freedom Foundation. Also, Reed and the Fantastic Four put these technologies to use constantly in their adventures. Their uniforms are made of the “unstable molecules” that Reed invented, and are wearable computers.
His own ego, Fantastic Four (1994), Fantastic Four (2005), Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Jessica Alba (Can you blame him?).
Like Plastic Man, Mister Fantastic’s greatest escape was his own origin: His drive to success caused him to risk the lives of his loved ones, and while he himself gained powers that he could keep secret, his best friend was changed into the monstrous Thing, a mistake to which Reed would pay penance for decades. Reed has saved Earth from the world-eater Galactus multiple times.
