Top Nerdy Ten: Adventure Game Nostalgia

By Rachel Cheng, (@iamrachel)

Salutations, nerds! Welcome to another Top Nerdy Ten. I’m your host, Rach and this week, going on our theme of nostalgia, I will be counting down my top adventure games from Sierra and LucasArts. Cue the MIDI intro music!

10. Mixed Up Mother Goose

The title really says it all. Just a fun old school Sierra kid’s game. Not to mention I’m a huge fan of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Jack, Jill, Humpty, Mary and her little lamb, all of it.

9. Sam & Max Series

Based on Steve Purcell’s comics, Sam & Max aren’t your typical buddy cops. But don’t let the dog/rabbit duo fool you, these two know how to get the job done. Errr, I think…

8. Space Quest Series

Star Wars fan? Trekkie? Space Quest follows the misadventures of Space Explorer/Janitor, Roger Wilco. Puns abound. Oh, them glorious puns.

7. The Dig

Tonally, the game was quite different compared to all the other games on this list. The storyline was much more serious (Asteroid, Earth, AHHH). Plus the puzzles were slightly more difficult than your typical adventure game, but it was still a lot of fun.

6. Maniac Mansion & Day of the Tentacle

This game reminded me so much of the Scooby Gang (Buffy reference anyone?).

Magic spells, music, mythology, oh myyy! For a game that came out 25 years ago, the storyline was perhaps the most compelling part about LOOM.

4. Grim Fandango

If you’re a fan of film noir, this was your dream game. Not only was the game super fun but it has an equally fun jazzy, bluesy, soundtrack.

3. Monkey Island Series

To this day I maintain that the best part of the entire series is the Insult Sword Fighting. Also the name Guybrush Threepwood? Classic.

2. Full Throttle

My dad actually won a copy of this game back in the day and my brother and I spent hours trying to work through each challenge as quickly as possible. Damn forks. Ben and Mo forever.

1. King’s Quest Series

This game was a family affair for us. Even after all these years, I still remember how frustrating KQ VI was. Damn swamp ooze 😉 Last month the iconic Sierra series was rebooted and released on Steam so be sure to check that out!

Ahhh, what a fun trip down memory lane. What were your favourite adventure games? Comment below 🙂

‘Til next time,

“When I think of Maureen I think of two things; Asphalt, and trouble”
Full Throttle is one of those rare titles I play almost every year. Poor little bunnies.

Oh man, there are so many games that I love on this list, just scrolling through this makes me all excited. Day Of The Tentacle’s mummy puzzle, Grim Fandango’s extraordinary Soundtrack, Sam & Max’s crazy humor… But for me, nothing beats Monkey Island. Especially The Secret and Curse Of, I can never choose between those two. They showed me how wonderful videogames can be and helped me get through some rather tough life stuff.

I haven’t played any of the original King’s Quest games yet, I should, but the first episode of the reboot was a great suprise. Very charming. Quite long as well, for episodic content. Took me around 8 hours to complete.
It also contains a lot of great voice-acting, I could listen to Christopher Lloyd telling stories all day.

Great stuff. This list also reminds me I should stop asking about LOOM and start playing the darn thing.
    So, thanks for that.

I am rubber, you are glue!

Maxwood, I can’t believe I missed your comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the article 🙂 I definitely had a fun time going down memory lane. It’s been a while since I’ve played most of those games. Full Throttle is one of my all time favourites. I could talk about that game for hours. Don’t feel too bad for those bunnies 😉 And yes go play the original KQ games. I maintain that KQ VI is the best out of the series (even if it was the most frustrating to complete). And I completely agree with you about Christopher Lloyd, perfect casting. Thanks again for your kind words! You call yourself a pirate? 😉
