Top 10 Post-Apocalyptic Movies

by Aaron Lowe (@loweaaron)

With the end of the Mayan calendar upon us, it might be appropriate to discuss the best in post-apocalyptic films. For millennia, man has thought the end of the world to be on our very doorstep, one need only look back to the hysteria surrounding Y2K for an example.

This is a very popular genre of filmmaking that can span eons of time, light years of space, and broaden our imaginations. How could the world end? Could it be an asteroid, volcanoes, or a new ice age? Disease, nuclear war or zombies?  How will we survive the aftermath, preserve our culture and rebuild anew? Will we become savages once again or will a small remnant of our once great culture survive to bring back the glories of the past?

Let’s take a look at what some creative minds have envisioned for our future in the aftermath of the devastation.

1. The Matrix

2. The Book of Eli

3. Mad Max: The Road Warrior

4. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

5. Terminator 2

6. The Terminator

7. 28 Days Later

8. 12 Monkeys

9. Waterworld

10. The Postman

Honorable mentions go to I am Legend and Reign of Fire for creativity and storytelling.
