The Making of Hotel Transylvania 2: Cloth Simulation Software Featurette

Not to state the obvious, but making a movie is no easy task. In the case of Hotel Transylvania 2, the visual effects team had to reevaluate their way of thinking and innovate new ways to make animated cloth look realistic while keeping up with the challenges put forth by the film’s director Genndy Tartakovsky.

Tartakovsky doesn’t like to see the same proportions twice, and sometimes characters moved at speeds that were difficult for the cloth simulator to keep up with. The team had to play with characters’ proportions so their clothes wouldn’t fall off and many times ended up breaking up a shot frame by frame so their software could handle it.

Their hard work paid off. Hotel Transylvania 2 grossed more than $466 million at the box office worldwide and became Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest film ever, now holding the record for a September opening in the U.S.

The DVD and Blu-ray just hit shelves on January 12 and in a featurette exclusive to the latter, the animation team explains how they pulled off such a demanding responsibility. Check it out below!
