The Magic of Harry Potter Lives on Through Theme Park Expansion and New Movie

If you are a Harry Potter fan, you may want to sit down, because this news may be too much to handle. After saying goodbye to the wizarding world in 2011 with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie, the Potter fandom mourned. We thought there would be no more. Yes, there’s always the theme park in Orlando (more on that later) and Pottermore, but nothing compares to waiting with an abundance of other fans for the midnight release of a movie or book, anticipating the exploits Harry and his friends would get themselves into.

That all changed yesterday. JK Rowling and Warner Bros. announced Rowling will adapt a book featured in the Potter series into a movie. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander is a textbook required for first year Hogwarts students. Rowling will write the screenplay following the adventures Scamander faced in compiling the book. It is expected to be the first in a series.

In a statement revealing the movie, Rowling said this will not be a sequel or prequel to the Potter series, but an expansion. It will take place seventy years before Harry’s story gets underway and begins in New York. For those keeping notes at home, that means fans will get to see the Roaring Twenties of New York City through magical eyes.

This expansion of the wizarding universe raises a few questions. As it will be set away from Europe, what does the American equivalent of the wizarding world look like? Is there a Hogwarts-like school in America? Does Grand Central Terminal have a secret wizard platform like King’s Cross? I can’t wait to find out these answers and more when the movie is released!

In other HP news, official plans for the expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter were also revealed yesterday. It was confirmed that Diagon Alley will be expanded and the Hogwarts Express will be used to take guests from gate to gate within the park. The expected opening date is Spring 2014. It was also reported a new hotel called the Cabana Bay Beach Resort will open prior to Diagon Alley. Because the hotel is scheduled to open in late March, it is safe to assume an April or May opening for the attractions.

Are you as excited as I am about all of this Harry Potter news? I’ll admit, I got a little teary-eyed writing this article because I’m so thrilled about it. Harry Potter defined a generation and I can’t believe we’re not finished with the magic yet.

Can’t even put into words how excited!! So wonderful that we will be able to enjoy something new in the world of Harry Potter. Now if we could just get 7 new books about the Order and what happened first time around……

So amazing! Excited for JK’s magical screenplays! I second Kaitlin’s comment, and would also love to see a books or movies about the Hogwarts’ founders!

I am one of the many Potterheads who rejoiced over this news. I have always been fascinated by JK Rowling’s wide imagination and I admire the magical world she has created when she started on writing the Harry Potter series. I’m excited with how this “expansion” of the magical world would play out especially since it would take place in New York, apart from what we’ve grown accustomed with in Harry Potter. I really can’t wait to see what Rowling has in store for us next!
