The Flash: Welcome to Earth-2 Review

“Welcome to Earth-2” was the best episode of the season that brought life back to the series after a mediocre second season.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The Flash has seemingly fallen into the typical sophomore slump. So far it hasn’t been up to the lofty season one standards it set for itself. However, “Welcome To Earth-2” was as close to a season one episode you could get. It brought a fast pace, invigorated the storylines, and a ton of fun twists as well as Easter eggs.

There are so many thing to enjoy about Earth-2, but the mix of the retro and contemporary technology is at the top of my list. It allows The Flash to explore a more polished look of the early twenty first century, like with the fashion (Barry in a bow tie!), but still be able to add a modern vibe. I was expecting Earth-2 to be more advanced, technology wise, than Earth-1, but it wasn’t. Their technology was just different.

One of the aspects that made the episode was so fun was the unpredictability of the Earth-2 characters. Joe was a lounge singer, Caitlin and Ronnie were villains, Cisco worked for Zoom, Iris worked at the CCPD, and Barry was an adorable nerd. Deadshot as Iris’ partner was such a clever way to bring the actor back as Deadshot, without him really being Deadshot.

Not only were the characters different, the relationships were different. Joe and Barry don’t like each other on Earth-2? Say it’s not so. Joe died, but Mrs. Allen is still alive. The phone call between Barry and his mom almost did me in. It was such a touching and heartfelt moment that gave a hilarious episode some heart.

The episode was so good that Jay and Caitlin’s storyline wasn’t a drag. His storyline actually gained some traction. It was one of the few times we have seen Jay suit up, and actually use his powers, and it was a treat. That is what I’ve always wanted to see from Jay, but  his character has been disappointing so far. With Caitlin working on perfecting the formula, it shouldn’t be too long until we see the Golden Age Flash actually be the Golden Age Flash.

Easter eggs were a huge part of the episode. It was so much fun trying to find them all. There were too many to mention in this short review, but the most obvious ones were: the names written on the telephone (Hal, Bruce, Diana, Eddie), Snart as mayor of Central City, and a glimpse Supergirl, Jonah Hex, and the Legion Ring while they were running through the speed cannon.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
