The Flash: Family of Rogues Review

Leonard and Lisa Snart, aka Captain Cold and Golden Glider, returned in “Family of Rogues.” The episode focused on the theme of family dynamics and a tale of two fathers.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

It’s always a pleasure to see Wentworth Miller return as Captain Cold. Once again Barry was double crossed by Captain Cold. After being duped by Leonard the second time, you’d think he’d learn to never to trust him. Cisco, on the other hand, thought ahead and installed The Flash’s suit with a fancy new heat lining, which was quite useful.

One of the best acting choices Miller makes is the seemingly good heart he has underneath the duplicitous exterior, and you believe it. Not only did he reluctantly accept Barry’s help, he also hesitated when his dad told him to shoot the forensic scientist. Even though he hates Barry, not as much as he hates his father, Captain Cold does have an underlying affection for the speedster.

Up until now, little has been known about the personal lives of the Snart siblings. “Family of Rogues” gave the audience a glimpse into their familial relationships. On the series Once Upon a Time, they say evil’s not just born, it’s made. This is how The Flash decided to explain Captain Cold and Golden Glider. They had a horrible father in Lewis. He was abusive and continued to be when he planted a bomb in his daughter. Lewis crafted his offspring to be criminals. For those who watched Smallville, Michael Ironside, who played Lewis, also played Lois Lane’s father General Sam Lane.

Joe and Iris had a pretty emotional episode. It’s hard to believe that Iris is okay with her father lying to her for 20 years, but it’s a welcome reaction. The series has a horrible habit of keeping secrets from Iris. This paints the character in a bad light. It seems as if the writers have learned from that colossal mistake and decided that keeping Iris in the loop is the best idea.

Their father and daughter relationship was used in direct contrast to Leonard and Lisa’s relationship with Lewis. Joe cares about his daughter and wants to keep her safe, sometimes going about it the wrong way, but Lewis couldn’t care less about his children. He threatened to kill one of them if the other didn’t help him run a heist. He won’t be winning any father-of-the-year awards.

Cisco and Lisa were just flat-out adorable. They’ve had an interesting relationship that started off as Lisa flirting with an uncomfortable Cisco. The episode had them genuinely bonding as she exposed a vulnerable side.

The Earth-2 storyline took a backseat for much of the episode. However, the little screen time it did receive was well used. Jay and Caitlin created a time cannon. Surprise. Harrison Wells traveled through the time cannon. I would have liked to see more of Wells in Earth-2, or even just more Earth-2.
