Five Things I’m Anticipating From The Dark Knight Rises

by Matt Goodman

First and foremost, hello fellow nerds, and welcome to MY FIRST blog column FOR The Nerd Machine. I’m the new addition to this wonderful establishment and I cannot wait to discuss my thoughts on about the world of entertainment with all of you. Quick background on me, I live in Washinton, DC and have written about movies, TV and such for the past three years. Some of my favorites include Pulp Fiction, The Dark Knight, The Big Lebowski, True Blood, and of course Chuck.

To start things off, I’m going to share my overflowing thoughts regarding a little film known as The Dark Knight Rises! Christopher Nolan’s third and final film in his ambitious Batman trilogy is, for most moviegoers, the most anticipated post-Avengers film of 2012. To begin my initiation to TNM, I decided to share the top five most things I’m anticipating most about The Dark Knight Rises.

5) The Bat

Ever since initial footage of the new airborne vehicle known solely as “The Bat”, I’ve been intrigued by this flying contraption. My mind was set on loving this new vehicle once I saw the latest theatrical trailer featuring Batman and Catwoman flying over the building after Batman’s deadpan line, “this isn’t a car”.  I can’t wait to see what Nolan has in store for us with “The Bat”!

4) Catwoman

I wasn’t entirely sold on Nolan’s Catwoman at first, mainly due to the lack of no kitty ears.  However, just like “The Bat”, I warmed up to it, or as Selina Kyle says, “I’m adaptable”. Anyone find that a bit Batman: The Animated Series-esque, or even similar to Arkham City? I sure did! I wholeheartedly trust Nolan in casting Anne Hathaway – whereas I had doubts about Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight. Boy, was I wrong. Want to find out a juicy secret? Visit and find out!

3) Football

Football and Batman? Where’s the sign-up sheet? This requires no further explanation. I just want to see the full Gotham Rogues sequence involving that rad field explosion.

2) Bane

This, in my humble opinion, was some of the best marketing ever. The way the mostly unknown villain Bane has slowly become one of the creepiest film icons without the film even being released is something. Deshi deshi basara basara!

1) The rise [and fall?] of Batman

There are some strong hints that Batman could DIE in this film. While some footage in the trailers have shown Batman with a cane, that could be from the long fall after Harvey Dent’s death. In the end of The Dark Knight, you can see Batman limping to his Batpod after the fall. Clearly this can be an explanation, no? Would Warner Bros. really let Nolan kill maybe their most valuable character? Whatever happens, I trust Nolan to make a film for the ages and expect that Best Picture Oscar nod that The Dark Knight should have had to come through this time.

I would say he would die. In the comics bane breaks Batman’s back over his knee. I know, it sounds ridiculous right? Writers staying true to the story?!

It looks badass. All aspects of it. Badass.

I say JGL is going to replace Bruce Wayne as Batman skipping the Robin story altogether and highlighting the comment(s) in the first movie that if you make yourself a symbol you can never die. I don’t know I won’t be sad if it doesn’t turn out that way but they bulked JGL up for a reason and it seems to be a Nolan-esque move.

I think batman should die. It would be a very poetical ending to a great trilogy. Even batman says you die a hero or live long enough to become a villian.

Also, who else thinks bane’s mask looks really stupid?

I agree with Joseph. The Batman is going to die: both the comic and the trailers are preparing us for it… I trust Nolan to make it one epic death.

I think Bane’s mask looks unique and scary!

Here is what I’ve heard. It could be speculation but we will find out soon enough. The first 5 – 15 minutes of the film shows Batman being broken by Bane. Then the rest of the movie recaps weeks prior to this. My hope is that it doesn’t and shows Batman rehabilitate himself and rises up again to face Bane…
