Superheroes and Sci-Fi Top the Most Popular Movies in 2013

Superheroes and sci-fi were the Cinderella’s of the ball this year according to StumbleUpon – the mobile and desktop exploration tool with more than 30 million users.

Six of the ten most popular movies on the site featured caped crusaders and…well… space. Check out the rankings below:

1)      Blackfish

2)      2 Guns

3)      The LEGO Movie

4)      Gravity

5)      Iron Man 3

6)      Captain America: The Winter Soldier

7)      Enders Game

8)      The Bling Ring

9)      Kick-Ass 2

10)   Man of Steel

Clearly there is much anticipation for The LEGO Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as these two films are slated for a 2014 release, and Blackfish – the documentary film about orca whales that made a splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – topped the list at number one.  The rest of the list not only tells us that there is still love out there for Denzel Washington, but also that Emma Watson has shed her Hermione Granger image.

As the year comes to a close, StumbleUpon decided to mine through their system and take a look at what was hot – and what was not – in 2013.

What are some of your favorite films or films you are looking forward to seeing? Tell us for a chance to sin a copy of “Elysium: The Art of the Film” and “Once Upon A Time: Behind the Magic”!

I enjoyed ‘Thor 2″ quite a bit. I am also looking forward to seeing ” 300: Rise of an Empire” and holding my breath for The Captain America & Avengers 2 when they get released…

I really liked Star Trek into Darkness. I haven’t had a chance to see Gravity, Thor 2, or Enders Game yet, but I’ll probably see them as soon as they’re on Netflix 🙂

I liked the new Star Trek. Sadly I haven’t had time to see most the movies I wanted to this year.

Oh dear, I’d better get watching because I haven’t seen many on that list yet – just Iron Man 3 … but I have bought Man of Steel & intend to see Gravity soon.
My favourite this year was Thor: the Dark World.

    My favorite movies of 2013.

    1. Man of Steel: I could list this movie nine times then pick a number 10. It was THAT good
    2. Thor: The Dark World: I hope Marvel makes TEN more THOR movies, starring Chris and crew. Blows IM3 out of the water.
    3. Star Trek. Into Darkness: Great movie. The only bad part is the attempts to “humanize” Spock.
    4. Fast and Furious 6: Great movie, period.
    5. Iron Man 3: I LOVE my superhero movies.
    6. Elysium: This movie reminds me of the direction our society is going in. Sad but eye opening.
    7. Olympus Has Fallen: This movie made White House Down look cheesy. Sorry but Jamie Fox just didn’t seem “presidential” to me.
    8. The Wolverine: I liked this one better than I thought I would.
    9. World War Z: Lots of surprises though I think the zombie thing is a bit overdone.
    10. Pacific Rim: A bit cheesy but it reminds me of what could be done.. I would love a Johnny Sokko remake.

One of my favorite movies of 2013 – and in fact it has become one of my top favorite movies – was Oblivion. The visual design of that movie was just stunning and incredibly memorable. Not to mention the fantastic score. What’s your utopia – an ultra-modern house above the clouds (with that pool!) or a self-made dwelling free of technology in the wilderness? I dearly wish they would publish a full art and making of book on this movie. There were some wonderful character moments in this film between the three stars (not to mention Morgan Freeman), who all delivered stellar performances. Just an amazing film from start to finish. Would really love to win that Elysium art book!

The Wolverine and Man of Steel were really good. Also, I really want to see Iron Man 3, and I can’t wait for X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014.
