Who else is beyond excited for Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot? In case you missed the announcement in August, ABC has ordered Whedon to produce a pilot based on Marvel’s peacekeeping government agency found in their comic books and most recently in the blockbuster film The Avengers. Led by Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, which deals with threats within the universe.

After much fan speculation about who would be in the show (Will the Avengers make an appearance? Will the agents be those from the comics?), TVLine got the scoop on what characters to expect.  They are:

* Skye: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

* Agent Grant Ward: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

* Agent Althea Rice: Also known as “The Calvary,” [sic] this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

* Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

If these names don’t sound familiar to you, that’s because they didn’t exist before this show. That’s right, King Whedon, along with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, are writing all new characters for the pilot.

No word yet on casting, but I think it would be a safe bet to assume at least one Whedonverse actor will be in the mix, wouldn’t you?

What do you think of these breakdowns? Who would you like to see cast in the roles? And are you as thrilled as I am to possibly have Whedon’s work back on our TVs every week?
