Review: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

by Gausia Chowdhury (@gausniac)

I’m a “Jane Austen nerd,” meaning every time BBC puts out a new adaptation of one of her novels (the five-hour version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth is and always will be hands-down the best), I rush to read/see/watch it. When I heard that Hank Green (Vlogbrothers) and Bernie Su were creating the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a modern-day telling of Pride and Prejudice for Youtube, I was thrilled that I was going to enjoy my favorite novel in yet another form.

Lizzie Bennet is a twenty-four-year-old grad student studying Mass Communications and living at home with her eccentric parents, two sisters (sweet Jane and boy-crazy Lydia), and their cat, Kitty.  Lizzie starts a vlog as a part of her Master’s thesis project and talks about her daily life, including adventures with her over-the-top mother, financial struggles, difficulty of securing a job after her graduation due to the rough economy, and of course, being single.  Lizzie’s best friend, Charlotte Lu, helps edit and produce the videos.

Characters often make an appearance in the videos to add their own perspectives and/or reenact stories for the benefit of the audience.  So far, we’ve seen/heard of some of our favorites including; Bing Lee (a hot doctor and Jane’s love interest), Mr. Darcy (aka Mr. Douchey), Mr. Ricky Collins (a web video entrepreneur under the tutelage of his venture capitalist, Ms. Catherine DeBurgh), and George Wickham (a swimmer with swoon worthy abs).

Along with the amazing cast, the story adaption has undergone multiple changes to fit with the present day.  What I particularly love is that the storyline isn’t forced and holds true to the underlying themes and original characters.  Although I’m very familiar with the story, I’m as invested as ever and interested to see how the creators are going to adapt the next part of the story. Austen nerd or not, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries can be enjoyed by all!

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries are released every Monday and Thursday on YouTube.

I had a friend just tell me about “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” after I tweeted about being grateful that I didn’t have a mother like Mrs. Bennet while watching the 5hr version of “Pride & Prejudice”. (and yes, I agree, the 5hr version will ALWAYS be the best & most preferred!!!) All that to say I’m very excited to see this new take on Jane Austen’s work. 🙂 Thank you for featuring this article!

I love the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. So awesome. I also love that they have so many different outlets that you can interact with on a regular basis as the story progresses. There are facebook pages, tumblrs, twitters, pintrest pages, and so on for each of the characters as well as the main show website. Of course, the videos are the best, and I love the cast. I can’t wait until we finally see Darcy!
