Once Upon a Time: Theories and Unanswered Questions

by Melissa Cavallo (@melissacavallo)

Every week, ABC’s Once Upon a Time adds to the story of what happened before and what’s happening after Regina casts the curse on the all the fairy tale characters. We are given a little more of the puzzle in each episode, and for every answer, we still have even more questions. It seems creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis like to make their audience want more. There have been a lot of questions throughout Season One and Two, with some answered and some still waiting.

A few big questions of Season Two:

Where is Pinocchio/August? He just disappeared at the beginning of the season, but we know he is alive because he sent the postcard to Neil in “Broken.”

Why hasn’t Neil arrived in Storybrooke yet?

Where does Cora hide her heart? When Hook tried to remove her heart in “Queen of Hearts,” we find out that she doesn’t keep it where everyone else has it.

Who is Rumpelstiltskin’s son?

Was it just coincidence that Henry, the Saviour’s son, was taken to Regina so she could adopt him?

How does Emma have magic in her? She is the product of true love.

What was in the box August showed Neil?
So, who is Rumpelstiltskin’s son? Fans have speculated and the two main theories are either Peter Pan or Neil Cassady (Henry’s father). What we know about Baelfire is that he went through a portal that led him to a world without magic. That world could possibly be ours, where Neil Cassady lives. Also, when Pinocchio/August was pretending to be Rumpelstiltskin’s son, Rumple did not question his age; and August and Neil look roughly the same age.  If in fact Baelfire is Rumpelstiltskin’s son, that would mean Henry is Rumple’s grandson (now that would be awkward, one big happy family).

Was it just coincidence that Henry, the Saviour’s son, was adopted by Regina? The show has only mentioned it once, when Regina asked if Mr. Gold gave Henry to Regina on purpose. At the beginning of Season One, Mr. Gold did not know of the curse and that he was Rumpelstiltskin, so who helped Henry come to Storybrooke? One theory that has come up is August was the one that made Regina adopt Henry. One factor that points to this theory is that August was brought to our world to help Emma become the saviour and we see him try to do this in “Tallahassee.” Another factor is when Regina first sees August in front of her house; she says he looks familiar to her. The creators have recently said in Once Upon a Time’s official podcast that this question will be answered very soon.

On another note, there has been speculation of different actors being cast in the upcoming season of Once Upon a Time. It has been officially announced that Rose McGowan will be playing the role of young Cora, so perhaps we will see the back story of the Miller’s daughter and the deal she made with Rumpelstiltskin all those years ago. The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green will be playing Tamara, a character who is currently unknown.

What are your theories and unanswered questions for Once Upon a Time?

“At the beginning of Season One, Mr. Gold did not know of the curse and that he was Rumpelstiltskin”

Say what now? Pretty sure he did. Mr. Gold always knew who he was. If I missed some event where he got his memory back before everybody else, what was it? He knew before the curse was lifted.

Anyway, pretty sure you are wrong there. He avoided that part of the curse, and Regina only began to suspect that was so at the beginning of season one.

I think Neal is both Baelfire and Peter Pan. I think when he left for a world without magic he first wound up in Neverland where he became Peter Pan. He spent many years there not aging before either choosing to leave or accidentally winding up in our world where he took another new name and started aging before meeting Emma and fathering Henry.

Beany- I was listening to the offical Once Upon a Time podcast and the creators themselves said Mr. Gold did not know who he was, however, when Emma arrived in Storybrooke was when he started to remember. That’s why Mr. Gold does not want to cross the boarder now because he will go back to being only Mr.Gold.
Aby- I agree with you, it is something along those lines 😀
