Once Upon a Maleficent

The first time that I heard that Disney was going to make an entire movie about Sleeping Beauty’s villainous beauty, Maleficent, I was all ears. When casting was announced for the film, Maleficent, which blazes into theaters on May 30th, I wasn’t sure what to think. Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. She’s gorgeous and not only a strong actress but an extremely intimidating presence, but could she pull off that strange balance of grace and terror that the animated Maleficent was able to pull off in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty way back in 1959? Afterall, she’s emulating a character who turned herself into a dragon. A dragon, people. She was breathing fire all over the kingdom and at one point, turned an entire forest into spikes. I still to this day do not know how Prince Philip fought his way through that nonsense, but what I do know, is that Maleficent is a force to be reckoned with and I was hoping that Angelina Jolie wouldn’t let me down. And she didn’t. At least as far as the trailer goes.

When the first teaser trailer was released for the film, you can see gorgeous landscape shots of where a sweet and innocent Maleficent grew up. The film is specifically Maleficent’s story, and audiences will be able to see the events that went down that made her life plans switch around to that of making Princess Aurora’s life a bit of a nightmare. In that original trailer, they made it quite the tease. A shadow of Jolie here and there, a glimpse of the incredible costume design by Anna B. Sheppard, and then it happened….the cackle. That infamous cackle of Maleficent that would haunt my dreams as a child and Jolie not only emulated it, but she managed to completely reinvent the spinning wheel. To give audiences a taste for even more, a brand new trailer called ‘Dream’ has been released. Not only does it show more footage of this action/fantasy thriller, but all the visuals are hauntingly scored to Lana del Rey singing the Disney classic, “Once Upon a Dream” in the background. May 30th cannot come soon enough.
