Mad Max: Fury Road’s Imperator Furiosa Has Her Own Comic

Capitalizing on the success of Mad Max: Fury Road’s most popular character, Vertigo Comics has released a prequel comic concentrating on Imperator Furiosa. It is the second in a series; an origin story for Immortan Joe and Nux came out last month.

Mad Max: Fury Road – Furiosa fills in the blanks about her background and how she devises her plan to escape Joe’s Citadel and take his wives with her.

The film’s director George Miller, along with its co-writer Nico Lathouris and storyboard artist Mark Sexton, all wrote the issue and while this is a story about Furiosa’s past, they stick to the film’s formula and keep it a mystery. It is mainly her relationship with the wives that is explored and as such, shows how badass she is to protect these women. Through the artwork – which is done in a dark and scratchy style to perfectly tie in to the movie – and the storytelling, more is learned about Furiosa while still keeping her an ambiguous figure in the series.

Mad Max: Fury Road – Furiosa hit stores yesterday. Comics about Max’s backstory come out July 8 and Aug. 5.
