Last Resort: Hostage Crisis

Up until this point, I’ve found Last Resort fairly believable. Sure, a submarine captain could have challenged missile firing orders and then taken over an island; why not? But when the Pakistani military took over the boat that was bringing the Colorado crew’s family members for a visit and news cameras showed a woman being shot in the head and thrown over the boat among other murders, that’s where I draw the realism line. News should be reported with no bias, but broadcasting executions push the limit of good taste. You never want people to see their family members killed on TV.

And I had been looking forward to this episode! I thought it would be interesting to see how the crew members interacted with their family members after a long absence, all while knowing the visit would be short-lived. Though the previews gave away the fact that Pakistan was taking the boat hostage, I never thought it would go so far to the point of killing. Plus, the previews didn’t give away the whole story – Pakistan wanted the Colorado to nuke India or they would continue executing hostages.

However, I did find it interesting that Pakistan was finally brought to the center of the story. As you may recall, James’ SEAL team was on a mission in Pakistan before the Colorado picked them up in the pilot. It was nice to find out what they were doing there and why it was so important Kylie get the video from their helmets explaining everything.

It was particularly chilling when the Pakistani leader said he was just taking inspiration from Chaplin regarding his boat takeover. What was even more telling of their motivations in this hostage situation, though, was when it was revealed the leader on the boat/head executioner’s brother was killed in the SEAL’s Pakistan mission. Did you guys see that twist coming?

What about the fact that Christine was kidnapped by a rogue SEAL and Paul was killed by the Pakistanis? It was obvious she was in anguish over his death, but what do you think she hoped to accomplish by kissing him, knowing full well Sam would see it on TV (not knowing he was actually on the boat about to assassinate the Pakistanis with the SEAL team)?

How do you think Chaplin will treat Grace from here on out seeing as how he thinks she’s the CIA mole since she produced the nuclear launch key? Andre Braugher played that moment wonderfully and I can’t wait to see how that storyline plays out in the few episodes that are left. In fact, his acting was brilliant the whole episode and I look forward to his next project.

It was a very tense episode that was one of the series’ most enjoyable because it concentrated so much more on the strategy and war aspect as opposed to hijinks on the island. It is of note to mention this was the ninth episode of the series and they didn’t get word of their cancellation until episode eleven or twelve. I’ll be fascinated to see how they write themselves out of these situations into a satisfying ending for a show that has had many ups and downs in its limited run.

For example, one down for me is that the COB has been missing for two episodes after having his feet burned by I’m-Too-Sexy-for-My-Shirt and his men, and no one in the Colorado’s crew seems to care. Grace mentioned he hasn’t reported for duty, but surely it’s been at least a week since he was tortured and no one has gone to look for him? Do they just not care that he’s missing? It’s improbabilities like that and on-camera executions like I mentioned previously that take me out of the story and make me have a lower opinion of the show as a whole.

Despite that, I do think this was one of the best episodes yet. I just wish it had come sooner and maybe they wouldn’t have gotten canceled. Too much time was spent on the island in the beginning of the show and not enough time was spent on important things like the possibility of firing missiles on other countries and the likelihood that it would all start WWIII.

What did you think of the episode?
