It’s Time To Get Things Started: The Muppets Are Coming to ABC!

It’s that time of year again, folks.  While the television industry takes the next few days to play its version of “The Hunger Games”, we fans wait with bated breath to see if our favorite shows survived.  But among the elation of renewal and despair of cancellation, we also get to find out what new programs will be popping up on our television screens in the next several months.  Yesterday, among news of a “Supergirl” series at CBS, a spinoff of “The Flash” and “Arrow” on The CW, and a “Wizard of Oz”-themed show over on NBC, ABC also announced some of the shows that have been picked up for their schedule.

Guys, the Muppets are coming back on TV.  MY HEART IS FULL OF RAINBOWS.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new show- tentatively titled “The Muppets”- will be a “documentary-style” set-up (similar to “The Office”) and look into the personal lives of our favorite fuzzy friends as they produce a late-night talk show.  ABC calls it “a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages”.

It’s been awhile since the Muppets have been part of a weekly series; while they’ve appeared on talk shows, specials, and awards programs every so often, they haven’t had an actual show to call their own since 1998 (“Muppets Tonight”).  Of course, they’ve proved that they can helm a successful series from “The Muppet Show”, which ran for five seasons back in the late 70s, won four Emmy Awards, and played in syndication for many years afterwards.

Thankfully, this new show seems to be in pretty good hands.  Not only did the pilot reportedly receive a standing ovation from ABC executives at its first viewing, but one of the writers, Bill Prady, has a long history with the Muppets.  He was a writer on “Fraggle Rock” and the Disney Parks attraction “Muppet*Vision 3D”, and has also written for “Gilmore Girls” and “Big Bang Theory”.  He’ll also be sharing both writing and producing credits with Bob Kushell, who has written for “3rd Rock from the Sun”, “The Simpsons”, and “Suburgatory”.

While no date has been set for the premiere yet, we can probably expect “The Muppets” in our living rooms this fall, and I can’t wait to watch them in action.  Welcome back to television, Muppets.   Here’s hoping it’s the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational show around!

As announced by ABC today, The Muppets will air on Tuesdays at 8 PM!  A trailer has also been released- check it out, below!
