It’s Not You, It’s Me: Breaking Up with Your Favorite TV Shows

by Marcus Luera

We have all been there.  You have that show that was can’t miss, waiting week-to-week for the new episode.  You talk about it on the net, maybe even write fan fiction. Whatever you do, all signs are that you are hooked and in it for the long haul.

At least you think you are. But then something happens.  Some jump-the-shark moment or worse: the show has gotten stale and you find yourself not as in love as you once were.  What do you do?  Do you tune week after week, hoping the show will recapture the magic that made you drew you in in the first place or do cut your losses and move on?

That depends. If the show becomes a chore to watch, if all you do is complain about it, then maybe it’s time to leave.  It is better to bail then keep watching out of habit. And sometimes shows bounce back in later seasons.

Just remember if you do decide to bail, don’t feel bad and don’t listen to people telling you that you are not a fan.  Make it a clean break.  Your tastes might have changed, and it may just be easier to leave with the happy memories and your favorite episodes than to sit watch a show that now feels nothing like the one you started watching.

Remember: TV-watching should be fun!

This has happened to me…After Gossip Girl and Voyager, I had all these rebound realationships with shows…Dexter…Nip/Tuck…White Collar…Burn Notice, before going back to reruns…

After some really bad shows, like Heroes 3rd. season, I have a very small tolerance with shows: If I think it’s bad for some 3 episodes, I bail out, no regrets. My latest falling out was with Once Upon a Time, in which I found the 2nd season just horrible. I watched the first 2 episodes, gave a quick glance at wikipedia to see how the remaining episodes were and got out.
