IndieGoGo Campaign Seeks to Build Real-Life Lord of the Rings City Minas Tirith

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I have way more money than I know what to do with. What project should I throw some of it at? I know! I’ll help donate lots and lots of it to help crowd-fund the building of a real life Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings!”

Well that’s a very specific thought, but one that could actually happen since a group of architects and structural engineers – who happen to be huge Lord of the Rings fans – recently launched an IndieGoGo campaign to do just that.

And here’s where the lots and lots of money part comes in: the team estimates the project’s cost to be £1.85 billion, or about $2.9 billion.

“We believe that, in realizing Minas Tirith, we could create not only the most remarkable tourist attraction on the planet, but also a wonderfully unique place to live and work,” reads the IndieGoGo page. “We’d love to create both residential and commercial properties, allowing for sustainable growth and a high quality of life.”

The group has a little over a month left in the campaign and has raised almost £81,842. Perks include a stone monument with your name on it, a night in one of the hotels to be built, and the opportunity to become a Lord or Lady of the city.

If the project is funded, they plan to start building the city in 2016 and hopefully have it completed by 2023. However, the architects and engineers behind the project are practical and promise no one will be charged if they don’t reach their goal. They even state on the IGG page, “…this project is a light-hearted venture with virtually no chance of succeeding.”

If you would like to see the project succeed, though, head over to its IGG page for more information.
