Have You Always Wanted to Take Classes at Hogwarts? You’re in Luck!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been waiting for your Hogwarts letter to arrive for quite a few years now, even if you’re way past the age of acceptance. But all of us Harry Potter fans are in luck: a group of superfans have created a series of online classes called Hogwarts is Here that is free to the general public (AKA Muggles).

Hogwarts is Here is a nine-week course that is a mix between a role-playing site and a MOOC (massive open online course.) Though there may not be a Sorting Hat, you can choose a Hogwarts house and virtually move into its dorm. Once you’ve moved in, you can interact with fellow students, purchase books, and earn points for your house. However, perhaps what is most appealing is the fact that you can actually take Hogwarts classes online. As a first year student, you are expected to take Charms, Herbology, Transfiguration, Potions, History of Magic, Astronomy, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Each course consists of nine lessons, all involving a short writing prompt, supplemental reading, and a number of other various assignments.

The assignments vary, but most are essays. For example, one Transfiguration task involves writing a 300-word essay in which you explore the possible loopholes in one of the exemptions to Gamp’s Law – an expansion on a comment Hermione makes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows about the five things that cannot be created with magic.

What is perhaps most impressive about the site is that is completely run by volunteers: editorial content, design, assignment grading, all of it.

If you want to support these selfless people who are keeping the magic of Harry Potter alive for all of us, check out hogwartsishere.com!
