Happy Birthday Stephen Hawking!

When Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with motor neuron disease at age 21, doctors said he would live only a few more years. But Hawking proved them wrong and defied the odds of the disease and celebrates his 73rd birthday today.

Hawking is arguably the world’s most famous theoretical physicist and is most known for his work with black holes, proving they can actually evaporate and that their mass can become energy in a discovery now called Hawking Radiation.

In addition to his academic works, he’s also an author of one of the best-selling science books ever, A Brief History of Time. Plus he’s guest-starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory. The man does it all!

The Theory of Everything, a biopic film about Hawking’s life, was released in November. In 2004, BBC made a television film about his early years starring Benedict Cumberbatch. That film, called Hawking, will air on the Discovery Channel this Saturday, Jan. 10, in honor of Hawking’s birthday.

Please join us in wishing him a happy birthday!
