The last Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie came out in 2003. On March 16, 2018 Lara Croft will find her way into the cinemas again, with Academy award winner Alicia Vikander in the starring role. 15 years later, we get a reboot, and the studios have released some photos and a plot synopsis to tease us! Keep reading to get the scoop!
The new Tomb Raider began principal photography on January 23, 2017. Filming started in South Africa and will soon be moving to London. Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is helming the film scripted by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Based on the 2013 Tomb Raider game by Crystal Dynamics (and the 2015 sequel game) the movie is set to follow a younger Lara Croft at the start of her journey.

Director Roar Uthaug has stated that the games have lent recognizable “touchstones” to the film, but unlike other video game film adaptations, there won’t be a lot of CGI and effects used. “Our movie takes a more realistic, grounded approach,” Uthaug has said. That grounded approach will have the audience following Lara Croft in an origin story as she grows from a young woman just trying to find her way to eventually becoming the legendary Tomb Raider.
Lara (Alicia Vikander) is introduced as an independent girl whose father, Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West) disappeared when she was just a young teenager. Flash forward to Lara as a 21 year old woman, and she’s living in London taking classes and working as a bike courier. She refuses to accept his disappearance, as well as the global empire he left behind. She decides to explore the mystery of her father’s mysterious death and journeys to his last known location – a tomb on a mythical island somewhere near Japan. Taken by ship with Captain Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), Lara has adventures awaiting her, including conflict with the film’s villain, Father Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins).
Produced by Gary Barber and Graham King (with Warner Bros., MGM, and GK Films), this Tomb Raider reboot promises new quests and dangerous trials for Lara Croft. Be sure to mark the calendars for March 16, 2018!
