Getting a Glimpse: Mary Poppins Returns
By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)
Mary Poppins has become an iconic character for Disney, coming to life on the screen in 1964. Now, Disney is bringing her back into our lives in a new sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. Production began in February of this year, and we are beginning to catch glimpses of what is to come!
While we wait for the film to premiere on December 25, 2018, the photo teasing has begun. Walt Disney Studios has released photos of Emily Blunt as the sensational Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda as the street lamplighter, Jack. In addition, a recent set photo with Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as the now grown Banks children has also been released. Give them a look!
Based on a novel by P.L. Travers, the first film (starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke) introduced Mary Poppins to the home of the Banks family. As a nanny, she came to fulfill a need and brought them together as a family again. Travers wrote seven other novels about the practically perfect nanny, and the new sequel, written by David Magee (Life of Pi) and produced by John DeLuca (Chicago) and Marc Platt (La La Land), is set to pull material from those books.
Directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago), Mary Poppins Returns takes place in depression-era London in the 1930s. It seems Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) has come back to the Banks family once again. This time, the Banks children – Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer) – are all grown up. Michael is living in his childhood home on Cherry Tree Lane with his three children (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson) and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters). Michael has suffered a terrible personal loss and it looks like Mary Poppins has a job to do once more. Like father, like son! Mary Poppins is joined in her endeavors by Jack, the street lamplighter (played by Hamilton’s ridiculously talented Lin-Manuel Miranda). We also get to go on the nanny adventure with other characters, such as Mary Poppins’ cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep); the banker William Wetherall Wilkins (Colin Firth); a balloon seller (Angela Lansbury); and Mr. Dawes, Jr. (Dick Van Dyke), the son of a cheery chimney sweep you might remember from the original film. Mary Poppins Returns will also bring us new songs and dances, with music written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray). And yes, rumor has it that Dick Van Dyke will have a little song and dance number to delight and entertain us!
Alright Disnerds, there you have it! Keep looking for photos and details for Disney’s song and dance sequel Mary Poppins Returns and get ready for Christmas in 2018 for more Mary Poppins!
