The Gamers Digest is designed to inform you Nerds with all the latest happenings in the world of video games. Today we cover Sony’s plans for Gaikai, a new game from the Mega Man creator, the release of a Street Fighter documentary and Americans spending habits with video games.

Sony Details Gaikai Plans

When Sony first purchased online service Gaikai, gamers were confused yet intrigued at the potential union between the two. Gaikai was announced as a feature to be built into the PlayStation 4, but details have been scarce since then. Recently, Sony has mentioned that the Gaikai service will be introduced into North America in 2014 and eventually Europe. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s CEO Jim Ryan mentioned the weak broadband connections many Europeans deal with and how that will be addressed before Gaikai is released. The feature will also be introduced to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as well. Although the idea seems promising and rich, it remains to be seen exactly what Gaikai will do and how it will be executed.

Mega Man Introduces New Title

Mega Man creator Kenji Inafune accounted a new game titled Mighty No. 9 during PAX. Although he wouldn’t admit it, the game bears a resemblance to Mega Man with its side scrolling action. The graphics are definitely vibrant and lively and the game seems very promising. Inafune announced the project would be headed to Kickstarter and was seeking just fewer than one million dollars for the entire project, which was met within 48 hours. If backers can contribute over $2.2 million dollars towards the project, then Inafune will port the game to the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Street Fighter Documentary Available on YouTube

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set included a documentary titled I Am Street Fighter: 25 Years of Inspiration, which goes over the history of the franchise and the fans that support it. On Capcom’s official YouTube channel, the documentary has recently been posted for everybody to watch. The documentary offers a fantastic look at the series from both a fans perspective and a competitive vision. You can watch the entire documentary here. It’s definitely worth watching.

Americans Spend $2.88 Billion on Video Games

In the second financial quarter (between April and June) of 2013, Americans spent $2.88 billion dollars on video games. This number is less than last year’s figures, but many analysts figure this is due to the current generation of consoles coming to an end. The numbers are fairly staggering considering the down economy and the lack of blockbuster titles that have been released. Even more interesting is the fact that $1.77 billion dollars was spent on digital content (downloadable content, add-ons and full games) compared to $769 million dollars spent on physical copes of games.

What do you expect Gaikai to provide to Sony’s consoles? Excited for the new Mighty No. 9? Have a favorite Street Fighter memory? Sound off in the comments below.
