Gamers Digest: June 14 (E3 Edition)
by Stephen Janes (@stephenkjanes)
The Gamer’s Digest is designed to inform you Nerds with all the latest happenings in the busy and cluttered world of video games, so you can be the most informed Nerd the next time you join your friends for an Xbox Live party.
New Consoles have Prices and Release Dates
During E3, we got a better look at the upcoming Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Both were given a plethora of games and features that come with the consoles themselves, but more importantly we were given prices and release dates. The Xbox One will be released this November for $499, while the PlayStation 4 has a more ambiguous release date of ‘Holiday 2013’ for a $399 price point. Preorders for both are breaking a number of websites and selling out quickly, so grab yours while you can.
Xbox Live to Offer Free Games Each Month
Xbox Live has been made more attractive by allowing two-free downloads a month if you have a Gold Xbox Live account. Each month, two games will be yours to keep, starting with Halo 3 and Assassin’s Creed II. There is no word if the games will still be yours if you cancel your Gold account, but they’re available now.
Xbox One to Start Offering Non-Gaming Achievements
When you preorder the Xbox One from the Microsoft website, one of the perks is an exclusive achievement titled, “Xbox One Preorder Achievement.” This achievement stays on your account and tells the world you owned the new Xbox console since day one. This could be a great segue into real life achievements implemented by Microsoft, should they decide to run with it.
Watch_Dogs Looks Awesome
Trailers and footage have been shown before, but gamers got a chance to see what Watch_Dogs would look like on the new Xbox One and PS4 consoles, and oh dear Odin, did it look fantastic. Titanfall certainly looked mindblowingly good and is a game that everybody wants to play, but Watch_Dogs looked stellar on the next-gen graphics. This could easily be a strong contender for Game of the Year and it isn’t even available yet.
Kingdom Hearts III Announced
Square Enix was given some time to show a teaser and some gameplay footage of Kingdom Hearts III, which is “in development” right now. This is huge news for fans of the franchise who have been asking for a true sequel to Kingdom Hearts II for years now. While there are a number of Kingdom Hearts games on portable devices, the console versions are often seen as the main storyline and the more popular iterations. Even bigger than that, KHIII will be released for both Xbox One and PS4 when the time comes.
There were a number of great announcements that weren’t mentioned here, but the idea of the Gamers Digest is to give you a quick rundown of the most important news pieces in the world of video games. Regardless of what console you hold allegiance with or who you think ‘won’ E3, these conferences always make me excited to be a gamer again.
