Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014
by Caleb Paullus (@theurbanraptor)
Let me start with WOW. There are so many new features in this year’s Duels of the Planeswalkers game!
It is really a perfect game for current, past and prospective players. It follows all the real-world rules of the physical card game, so it’s a great place to start if you are looking to get into Magic: The Gathering and don’t want to manage boxes and binders of cards.
Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014 is the 4th rendition of the game and sports much of the same modes as the previous versions. Players can use pre-made decks, go head-to-head, play cooperatively and story mode among other things. However, in this edition you also get, a separate “sealed play” campaign where you get to build your own deck, 10 new puzzle challenges and a cool player profile that tracks a ton of stats like most used mana color, wins, and titles earned.
I should also take a moment to mention the great tutorial feature which comes in handy for me when introducing friends to the game. It asks your experience level and adjusts accordingly to help utilize your time and optimize the instructions given.
Now some may complain and say it’s not the same as playing against a physical opponent. This may be true, but the amount of time and effort needed to play competitively can be daunting at times and this a great compromise. I mean, how often do you get demolish someone’s deck while having a drink and playing in your skivvies? All the time? What comic shop are you playing at?
All in all, this game is a great deal for 10 bucks. I recommend you go download it on any of the many platforms it’s available on: PlayStation® Network, iPad, Android Google Play, Amazon App Store, Xbox LIVE® Arcade and PC via Steam®. In fact if you download it, feel free to challenge me on PS3 under the name, theurbanraptor.
