Somewhere between Boston and Washington, D.C. in a futuristic American wasteland, lies Mega City One, a violent metropolis where criminals run rampant and order is sparse. Laying down the law is the local police force (called “Judges”) with the power to dole out punishment as they see fit, playing the role of judge, jury, and executioner. Dredd is the most-feared of all.
Written by 28 Days Later penman Alex Garland, Dredd 3D stars Star Trek‘s Karl Urban as the infamous Judge, who takes on the challenge of bringing down an epidemic, in which users of the psychoactive drug “Slo-Mo” experience a slowed reality. What starts as a normal day of training and evaluating a new recruit with psychic powers (played by No Strings Attached actress Olivia Thirlby) becomes a pursuit of drug lord Ma-Ma (Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey) and her cronies in a 200-story vertical slum.
Separate from the 1995 adaptation, Dredd 3D remains true to the popular character found in the comics. The film was a hit with the group of lucky Comic-Con 2012 attendees who were able to catch a sneak peek of the neo-noir action flick. From Lionsgate: “Filmed in 3D with stunning slow-motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.”
