Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Update

by Ana Lopes (@AnnLop)

The most anticipated Doctor Who episode of this year is only a few months away! Who is coming? Who is not coming? And what we can expect of the most anticipating party of the year?

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special will air on November 23, 2013 and there are already a few hints and news of what we can look forward in this episode.

According to Steven Moffat, this episode will be a 3D special directed by Nick Hurran (“The Girl Who Waited”, “The God Complex”, “Asylum of the Daleks” and “The Angels Take Manhattan”), which in itself is exciting, based on the other episodes he directed. The writing will obviously be Moffat’s responsibility and the shoots for this episode started on the beginning of April.

Starting up with the monsters, BBC has confirmed that the Zygons will definitely appear in the special, which will be the first time in the Doctor Who modern era (they were only briefly mentioned in the “Pandorica Opens” and “The Power of Three”). I think it’s possible other well-known monsters will join this episode, but seeing how Steven tried to detach himself from the Daleks and the Cyberman it’s possible these two are not in for the party.

Of course, one of the more exciting news for Whovians is the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper to the Doctor Who Universe. Personally, it wouldn’t feel right without David, so I am glad we all get to see him and Matt together in the Doctor madness.

Another returning actress is Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart (“The Power of Three”) the daughter of the legendary Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, which means UNIT is also back on this episode. This could mean that Freema Agyeman (Martha Smith-Jones) and Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith) could also join the cast, seeing how Martha collaborates with UNIT from time to time, but this is only theory and none of the actors confirmed their presence on the special.  John HurtJoanna PageIngrid Oliver are also confirmed to star on this special episode.

John Barrowman confirmed through his twitter account that he would not be involved with the special. According to the actor, , he was not asked to reprise the role of Captain Jack Harkness for the 50th anniversary. It is indeed sad as it would be a great fan fest seeing Matt, David and John together in one scene. Knowing Doctor Who, it’s possible that things aren’t really what we expect, maybe we are in for a unexpected surprise on the special.

There is still not much to go on about this special Doctor Who episode, but there is certainly a lot to speculate. When interviewed on The Jonathan Ross Show in March, Matt teased the fans with “paintings” as an important thing in the episode or story. I am not sure if this will elucidate the fans for even a second but I can see a lot of theories forming on Whovians minds. One thing certain is this will be an episode you won’t want to miss.
