Bring ‘Em Back!

by Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)

In case you’ve been living under  a rock for the past few weeks, the creator of cult favorite TV show Veronica Mars posted a Kickstarter campaign online to raise money to fund a movie follow-up of the show. Their original goal was $2 million in thirty days,  but fans rallied together in support and shattered that target in less  than eleven hours. At the time of this article’s publishing, the campaign has made over  $3.9 million with sixteen days to go in their endeavor. Because of the  success of this project, conversations have sparked on the Internet  discussing other shows fans would like to see revived.

When the question was posed on the Nerd Machine’s Facebook and Twitter (which you should be following if you’re not already!), unsurprisingly,  the majority voted for Chuck to have a second chance on TV or even on the big screen.

Another show that got a lot of votes on social media was one of my  personal favorites, Pushing Daisies. In the simplest terms, Pushing Daisies is about a guy named Ned who “makes pies and wakes the dead.”  It was critically acclaimed and beloved by fans, but after being dealt  a bad hand in the game of television, which included being postponed  during the Writer’s Strike in 2007, it was subsequently cancelled after  two seasons and twenty-two episodes. I’ll let you in on a secret – as  much as I love Pushing Daisies, and believe me when I say it’s a lot, I still can’t bring myself  to watch the last two episodes of the show. No matter how many times  I do a series rewatch, I haven’t been able to watch the last two episodes  because then it would be over for real; there would be no more. I would  personally love a Pushing Daisies movie so my fellow fans and I could see Ned, Chuck, Emerson, and  Olive get a happy ending.

Naturally, Firefly was also high on the revival response list. As much as I agree with  that sentiment, Joss Whedon has given two good reasons as to why it  will never happen: one; there was already a movie made, Serenity, which wrapped up everyone’s storylines, albeit not necessarily very  nicely and two; he and many of the cast members are busy with other  successful projects of their own.

Other answers we received ranged from shows like Wonderfalls to ones like Dark Angel and Gilmore Girls to Freaks and Geeks and Heroes. The sheer volume of replies proves fans are still passionate about  their favorite shows, even if they are long gone, and they will never  let that passion fade. The Veronica Mars model attests to the fact fans would have no problem chipping in  a few dollars to get projects off the ground if it meant they could  see the characters they love one last time. Hopefully this fan-funded  revolution will help other treasured but gone-too-soon shows be brought  back to life.

What other shows would you like to see again, either as a TV show  or movie, and why?

I would love to see Friday Night Lights again, I know they did a movie based on the book but a movie based on the series would be nice. Might actually get people watching the show again since so many people were ridiculously uninformed about how awesome it was.

A Fringe movie would be the most amazing.. ever.

And of course, Chuck. That one has to happen.

A Chuck movie in the hands of a good director could be fabulous. Could be like a James Bond that was actually fun to watch instead of painful. I thought there was still plenty of story-lines that could have been used in the Chuck series. Awesome and Eli could have had a much larger role in spy episodes as well as bringing in the rest of the nerd herd into the spy game. Plenty for a couple more seasons of good tv.
