Bones are Coming

By now you’ve heard of the success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter project and what it means for the future of entertainment. But did you hear about another little Kickstarter project that took place last year? In July of 2012, a little gaming company by the name of Reaper Miniatures in Denton, Texas set out to revolutionize gaming. Their idea was to deliver high quality, low cost, miniatures for use in table top roleplaying games and miniature wargames. The name for this new line of miniatures is called Bones.
Briefly, the Bones line of miniatures consists of different miniatures from the extensive Reaper catalog, newly produced in a plastic sculpt that Reaper states is ready to paint right out of the package-which means you don’t have to prime them. Before their Kickstarter project, the new line consisted of 12 sculpts. The goal of the Kickstarter was to expand the line quicker, and so a modest goal of $30,000 was set. Well, by the time everything was said and done, Reaper had raised $3.4 million-all due to their pledge rewards. For example, their Vampire Level backers will receive 150+ miniatures for their $100 donation!
In addition to helping Reaper expand the line exponentially, the additional money also allowed Reaper to move the production of the new Bones line from China to their own facilities in Texas. They’ve built a new warehouse space and have gotten the equipment to produce these plastic little marvels right here in the good ol’ USA, which means that we can get our hands on them cheaper and faster.
So, why should I be writing about a year old Kickstarter regardless of how awesome the achievement is? Because the Bones are coming this month. The Vampire packs (scroll down to see what backers got for their $100-you’ll be scrolling a while. There’s a lot there!) are due to arrive any day now, and there are lots of people who will be clearing their schedules for the next couple months to do some serious painting.
Even if you missed out on getting in on the Kickstarter, you don’t have to worry about missing out on all the Bones goodness. Over the coming months these figures will be showing up in your FLGS (friendly local gaming store) as well as Reaper’s online store, where, even now, you can get your hands on the existing Bones miniatures.
