Dwayne Johnson Releases First Baywatch Poster

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to Instagram on Monday to release the first official poster for the R-rated Baywatch film adaption that he’s co-starring in, alongside Zac Efron. While the idea of a Baywatch movie seems like a skeptical idea, the talent involved is enough to convince me that it has strong potential. Plenty of people wrote off 21 Jump Street when it was first announced, only to fall in love with it after its release. We will also be getting a David Hasselhoff cameo in Baywatch à la Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street! If Baywatch results in a huge payoff, I anticipate that the two franchises will compliment each other in succeeding films.

Baywatch has three components making it a promising project and recipe for success. First off, Dwayne Johnson is a huge (pun intended) celebrity right now and a substantial box office draw. Johnson alone will bring in at the least a $30+ million opening weekend. Second, it is directed by Seth Gordon, whose last two films (Identity Thief and Horrible Bosses) were massive hits at the box office. If the film receives solid reviews, it will have strong legs; well-reviewed R-rated comedy films have had very generous box office runs the past decade. Third, adapting this classic TV-PG show into a raunchy R-rated comedy makes Baywatch a recipe for success.

Baywatch will be released on May 19, 2017. It stars Dwayne Johnson (Furious 7Central Intelligence), Zac Efron (Neighbors 2: Sorority RisingMike and Dave Need Wedding Dates), Alexandra Daddario (San AndreasTrue Detective), Priyanka Chopra (QuanticoDon), Ilfenesh Hadera (OldboyChi-Raq) and Jon Bass (Big Time in Hollywood FLJane Wants a Boyfriend). The script is penned by Justin Malen and Robert Ben Garant; Seth Gordon is directing.
