Batkid: Make-A-Wish Transforms San Francisco into Gotham City

by Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)

Five-year-old Miles Scott knows all about fighting villains. Sadly, it’s because this brave little California native has been battling them in his own body in his fight with leukemia.

While sick, his Make-A-Wish was this: to become Batman for a day. Now that his cancer has gone into remission and he finished his last round of chemotherapy in June, Make-A-Wish granted his dream today.

In one of the most elaborate scenarios ever, the city of San Francisco has been turned into Gotham City and Miles has become a superhero. With the help of more than 12,000 volunteers, including police officers, city officials, news outlets, and an adult “Caped Crusader” companion, he has been tasked with fighting crime in the city.

Some of his missions include:

¥ Rescuing a damsel in distress caught on a cable car line

¥ Capturing The Riddler as he robs a downtown bank

¥ Stopping The Penguin from kidnapping the San Francisco Giants’ mascot

After leaving the baseball stadium, he will be presented a key to the city by Mayor Ed Hall and police chief Greg Suhr (stepping in for Commissioner Gordon) at a ceremony at City Hall.

According to a local news station, Miles didn’t know all of this would be happening. He apparently just thought he would get to dress up as Batman while in the city. However, Mayor Hall got involved and thought the event could be pulled off on a scale a kid would appreciate. But after thousands of volunteers pitched in their time and efforts, Miles’ Make-A-Wish has gone viral and he has been offered support from around the world.

The San Francisco Chronicle even printed a special edition of today’s newspaper with the headline “Batkid Saves City.” Who wrote the article you ask? None other than Clark Kent! Lois Lane, Perry White, and Brenda Starr wrote other articles in the issue.

Here are some great Vine’s of the action!
