Arrow – Crucible

Coming off of the last, stellar episode, Arrow continued its solid sophomore season with “Crucible.” Fans of DC Comics were in for more treats in this episode with more comic book characters inserted into the Arrowverse.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Once again, this episode focused on the Lance family. It was another rock-solid episode, but this time focused on the two siblings Laurel and Sarah.
With Laurel’s recent revelation, that she was the sole reason Tommy was in the Glades, she dove head first into a bottle of wine and popping pills. And, queue Hot Paul, umm I mean district attorney Adam to begin hitting on Laurel.

For some reason, Laurel continues to come across cold and unlikeable. This episode was a step in the right direction for rectifying that.
Black Canary, (or are we calling her that yet?) was revealed early in the episode as the thought to be deceased Sarah Lance. Apparently tales of her death were greatly exaggerated.

Also, it was an unexpected twist to find out that Ollie actually knew Sarah survived the boat crash and that he actually saw her after that fateful incident.

Sin had more of part this week after getting hurt by “The Mayor,” but her character still needs some more development to become a standout.

Ollie and Sarah’s team up toward the end of the episode was highly entertaining, especially the part where they traded weapons.

Admittedly, the storyline about “The Mayor” was weak. It was only there to further along the reveal at the end of the episode, to give the Arrow and Black Canary a reason to team up, and it felt more like an afterthought of the writers.

Speaking of that reveal at the end of the episode, Sebastian Blood is Brother Blood. It wasn’t much of stretch to believe that Sebastian Blood is Brother Blood, considering his character’s name.

In the DC comics, Brother Blood has had many incarnations. He is a fantastical manipulator who is able to gain tons of followers. Most notoriously, he is a Teen Titans villain. The first Brother Blood was cursed after killing a priest. The second gains powers by taking the blood of his followers. In the animated series he had more of a psychic ability and could control people.

According to him three things happen to people after a crucible: become stronger, die, or get accustomed to the pain. Ollie has become stronger while Sarah has become accustomed to the pain.

Anatoli Knyazev, also known as KGBeast, showed up during the island flashbacks, or I guess we can’t call them island flashbacks right now because he is on a ship. KG Beast is primarily an opponent of Batman who is a part of the top secret organization “The Hammer” of the KGB.

Stephen Amell was able to explore his tormented past. Most of the time, the audience is shown glimpses of his experience on the island, but not how much it has affected him to this day.

Finally, did anyone catch the Star Lab, the Flash, reference when Ollie was watching channel 52 (wink, wink) about the protests over the particle accelerator? They are slowly setting up Barry Allen’s debut with hidden Easter eggs here and there.

Of course, this episode was not as superior as the previous episode. The only thing that could have possibly surpassed last episode would be putting Ra’s Al Ghul physically on screen.

What do you think of Ollie knowing all along about Sarah’s survival from the boat crash? What do you think happened to Slade?

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

I thought this episode was amazing! I was very surprised that Oliver actually knew Sarah was alive and had survived the boat crash. I didn’t see the Flash reference, but now I feel I must go back and look for it!

I was actually not surprised that Oliver knew that Sara was alive. I’ve learned not to trust anything that he’s said about the island so far.
