Action Comics #1 Sells for $3.2 Million on eBay

A copy of Action Comics #1, which featured the first appearance of Superman, has sold for an astonishing $3.2 million on eBay.

The comic received a grade of 9.0 from the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), and is now regarded as the best-graded copy of the comic in the world. It notably has white pages as opposed to the off-white generally seen in comics of its age. Its final selling price also makes it the most expensive comic book in the world. The previous record was a copy of the same comic with the same grade, but it had off-white pages.

The auction started on August 14 with a bid of $1 million and then gradually increased next 10 days, bringing in 13 different bidders with a total of 48 bids. The action truly heated up over the final few minutes as the bidding went from $2.5 million to $2.6 million to $2.7 million before jumping up to $3,207,752. But during the last few seconds, the winning bidder snuck in with an offer of $3,207,852 to take home the “Holy Grail” of comics.

The comic was sold by collectibles dealer Darren Adams, owner of Pristine Comics in Washington, to
“I’m proud to have owned the most valuable comic book in the world,” said Darren Adams in a statement. “Working with eBay on this auction allowed me to share this rare treasure with their global community and ensure the next owner is just as passionate about its place in history.”

Action Comics #1 was released in June, 1938, and the world of comics would never be the same. Superman’s staying power as a pop culture icon is evident, and with the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film, he will be around for a whole new generation to come.
