A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 9, “Faves of 2014”

Separator

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to the very last “Fan’s Guide” of the year!  Ah, 2014.  The year that had us dumping ice over our heads, pronouncing names horribly wrong, and seeing more of Kim Kardashian’s tush than we ever wished to see.  Good times.  So SCREW “Serial”- let’s dive into the latest episode of our favorite non-murder-story-podcast, shall we?

As usual, you can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

This Week’s Special Guest:

Martin Starr! (@martinstarr)

Martin has been in everything.  Ever.  I’m not kidding.  But you probably know him best from “Freaks and Geeks”, Knocked Up, “NTSF:SD:SUV::”, “Party Down”, or his current project, “Silicon Valley”.  He’s also a poet, musician, and rap artist.  So basically, he’s really effing talented.

You can catch Silicon Valley on HBO, HBOGo, or here.

“Silicon Valley”

Martin decides to plug some graphic novels (see below), and then we head right into the topics.

Favorite Song of 2014

This is an eclectic group of songs, is it not?  All I’m saying is that I’m glad “Let It Go” from Frozen wasn’t anyone’s choice, because if I hear that song one more time, I think I might rip out my eardrums.  Parents, did you even make it through 2014 with your sanity?  Good lord.

Martin:

D’Angelo’s new album, “Black Messiah”

(The YouTube clip below is “Really Love”)

Tyler:

“Early”, Run the Jewels

Razzle:

“Shake It Off”, Taylor Swift

Kentucky/Dave:

“California”, Jamestown Revival

Zac:

“Uptown Funk”, Mark Ronson, ft. Bruno Mars

Extra Mentions:

Rancid

“Chandelier”, Sia

Favorite Film of 2014:

After the last couple of weeks, I feel like I should make some intelligent, sociopolitical commentary on the whole debacle behind The Interview to preface this topic, but this is ME we’re talking about and I am far too busy fangirling over Chris Pratt and his magnificent calves.  Everything IS awesome!

Martin:

Guardians of the Galaxy

Whiplash

Razzle:

Birdman

Kentucky/Dave:

Fury

Zac:

The Lego Movie

American Sniper

Tyler:

Jodorowsky’s Dune

Extra Mentions:

Interstellar

 Favorite Technology of 2014

I’m sorry, I can’t take this topic seriously.  WHERE. ARE. THE. HOVERBOARDS?!  Where are the flying cars we were promised? Where are the Jetsons transportation tubes? Or, more importantly, the conveyor belt that gets you showered and dressed in the morning?  Drones, shmones, I want what I was told we’d have by now in Back to the Future.

Martin:

Parrot Drones

Kentucky/David:

JIBO

Zac:

Formlabs Form 1

Tyler:

iMaschine App

Razzle:

Tesla Model S

Extra Mentions:

Tyler mentioned new touch/articulation technology- I’m not sure if this is what he meant, but… maybe?

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain:

  • This week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… TYLER! Because he’s back and I missed that adorable Canadian puppy.
  • “Uptown Funk” IS SO GOOD.  IT’S SO. EFFING. GOOD.  How can you not rock out to it? HOW, I ASK YOU?
  • Razzle’s crush on Taylor Swift is adorable. What would their celebrity name be? Tayzle?  Razzlor?  Either way, d’awwwww.  (But yeah, maybe don’t tell her that you’re going to take her “Into the Woods” or whatever.  That will not go well for you, sir.)
  • I am both intrigued and terrified by JIBO.  Like, JIBO is either Johnny Five… or going to lead the robot revolution against the humans.  There is no in-between.
  • We’re nine for nine with Edge of Tomorrow mentions per episode, I think.  Warner Brothers might need to add a scene with Tom Cruise wearing a TNM shirt at this point.
  • Regarding “Y the Last Man”- please read the graphic novels.  If you don’t see Zac as Yorick, I don’t understand your brain.  And PS, movie studios, it’s a dystopian sci-fi story.  YOU SEE HOW WELL THOSE HAVE BEEN DOING, RIGHT?  Make this happen.

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send your favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”, because who knows?  Maybe the guys will mention YOUR choice on a future episode!  You can also find our hosts all over social media:

Thanks for reading! See you next week, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Oh God, I love Zac and Razzle for their song choices. Uptown Funk is just the best song I’ve heard in month and Taylor Swift is hella cool.
Again a very good cast and a great recap of the year. Really cool. Keep going like this my friends.
I am really looking forward to the next episode.
    Love, Andrea

To be completely honest, I was distracted by the entire podcast by the absurd habit people tend to have of replacing the first word of two-word names with an initial. (i.e. “T Swift”) Maybe because I worked someone many moons ago who thought he was soooooo bitchin’, and he kept doing that (to accentuate his self-perceived coolness), but that drives me up the wall.

And as long as we’re on the topic of “T Swift”, I get that she’s a lovely piece of eye candy…but that’s ALL I get. Her version of “Last Christmas” was excruciating before I even knew it was her.

(My apologies to Andrea Schneeberger…but you did say “hella”. I rest my case.)

    **tirade off***

Loved the choice of “Fury” as Kentucky’s favorite movie. His song choice was a bit too country for me, but I would still enjoy a a shot of Woodford with him.
