A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 8, “Childhood Christmas Crushes”

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

‘Twas two days before Christmas, and the Nerd Machine

Were picking their favorites (sans Tyler Labine).

Movies and crushes and toys were discussed

So recap, I will!  Recap, I must!

Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast!  This is where you can find the topics and choices from each episode, and some jolly commentary from me.  Ho ho ho!

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Special Guest:

Joel David Moore! (@joeldavidmoore)

Joel is, as Zac mentions, an actor, producer, writer, and director.  You probably know him from “Bones”, Avatar, Dodgeball, or his current show, “Forever” on ABC, but if you have dorky guy friends like I do, you know him BEST from their endless impressions of his character J.P. from Grandma’s Boy.  Also, if you’re a “Chuck” fan, you may also remember Joel as Mackintosh, from “Chuck Vs. The Couch Lock”.

You can catch Joel on “Forever” on Tuesday nights on ABC, or watch the most recent episodes here.

The guys offer some interesting trivia about their pasts with Katy Perry (Joel appeared in her video, “Waking Up In Vegas”, but see below for the video Kentucky and Joel mentioned), and then move on to the topics of the episode.

“Ur So Gay”, Katy Perry

Favorite Childhood Crush

Ah, the innocence of youth.  Actually, it’s more the innocence of pre-internet celebrity crushes, isn’t it?  I, for one, am SO thankful that I grew up in an age before Twitter, particularly when I went through my SUPER-INTENSE celebrity crush phase (there were quite a few men with their faces plastered all over my walls).  But it’s quite endearing to hear the guys talk of their old crushes… also, for most of them, I think those swoony feels are still with them, hmm?

Shannon Miller

Jamie Lee Curtis

Love Letters

Katie Brown (Since a picture of Katie herself isn’t possible, I just drew a picture.)

Tiffani Amber Thiessen

Favorite Toy

How…. how were the guys even ABLE to make this choice?!  Favorite toy EVER?  But their choices display the truest of true things: toys were so much better when were little, weren’t they?  Technology, shmechnology!  What has it given us?  FURBIES, that’s what.  *shudder*  (Well, and lots of other awesome things but… WAS IT WORTH THE FURBIES, GUYS?  WAS IT??!)

GI Joe

GI Joe Aircraft Carrier

Red Tonka Jeep

Extra Mentions:

Muscle Men

Favorite Christmas Movie

I know Christmas is a beloved holiday by most, but personally? The thing I look most forward to during the holiday season is the annual rewatch of all my favorite Christmas flicks, including many of the guys’ choices, below.  Just add some whiskey and comfy pajama pants, and I’ll be “fahoo fores-ing” with the best of ’em.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

It’s A Wonderful Life

Extra Mentions:

It’s a Wonderful Life SNL Skit – “The Lost Ending”

Saving Christmas

A Christmas Story

Santa Claus: The Movie

(Not A Christmas movie, but mentioned) “Peter Pan Live”

(Not A Christmas movie, but mentioned) The Music Man

(Not A Christmas movie, but mentioned) To Die For

Bonus! Favorite Toy You Got For Christmas

I’m glad that Joel added this, though it was really just a homage to the video game systems of yore.  But how can you forget that feeling, when you ripped into your Christmas presents on Christmas morning and saw that ONE TOY you wanted SO badly?  Can we just all agree to make it socially acceptable for adults to get toys for Christmas, too?  Because I’m going to TOTALLY want all of the dinosaur toys when Jurassic World comes out (and, let’s all be honest, we’ve ALL been eyeing the Marvel stuff when we pass by the toy aisles, am I right?).

Atari 2600

Zac & Razzle:

Super Nintendo

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • This week’s “Hey You’re Awesome” Award goes to Joel’s parents.  Because I quite LIKE that they had all-inclusive toy-giving in the Moore household.  I mean, that MIGHT be because I hated Barbies and got them anyway, and BEGGED for Nerf guns and never got one so… YES.  GOOD JOB, JOEL’S PARENTS.  Forward thinking! A+!
  • Just for kicks, I looked up that G.I. Joe aircraft carrier toy that Zac mentioned on eBay.  THAT THING IS GOING FOR $1500.  As someone who has gone searching MANY times to find her husband’s favorite childhood toys to give as presents, I must say that I am ETERNALLY GRATEFUL that the hubs wasn’t a G.I. Joe fanatic.  Yeesh.
  • Isn’t it funny how, back in the 70’s and 80’s and before that, there were so many METAL toys?  Like, Kentucky’s Tonka truck was totally made of metal, and now EVERYTHING is made of plastic.  We were resilient kids, fellow old farts.
  • Kentucky saying that they should put up “Music Man” on YouTube with Zac and Razzle?  STOP TOYING WITH MY EMOTIONS, SIR.  (I’m a theatre fan.  My head would explode.)
  • That Saving Christmas trailer.  Oh, Kirk Cameron.  Why.
  • I’m adding this, and I hope he doesn’t mind, because it’s wonderful and made my Grinch-y heart grow three sizes: our dear Nerd Leader, Zac, recorded a Christmas song, and it is DAMN NEAR MAGICAL.  Take a listen.

Awesome episode to listen to while stuck at work this morning on Christmas Eve. Even more exciting to have my favorite Christmas movie mentioned, thank you! Merry Christmas to all!! 🙂

I’m going to chime in to say I’m so glad Kentucky included “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I love that movie because it’s one of the few from that generation that doesn’t go way overboard in the drama/acting department. It’s very down to earth, and a great story to boot. I would like to add that Christmas does not happen in my house until I’ve seen “A Christmas Carol” with George C Scott. Brilliant!!

Further, I’m going to throw a little support to Sara’s choice of “Mary Poppins”. True, it has zero to do with Christmas, but if it’s your Christmas tradition, then it should be included. (My 2 cents…which is actually worth a lot less…) Besides, Zac, tried to include Trident gum as a candy….! #LoveYouMeanIt

I would be remiss if I didn’t give props to Shannon for another great recap AND the clever little ditty in the beginning!! Also, It has not gone unnoticed your name popping up in the podcast has become such commonplace you don’t even mention it anymore. 😉 #DontForgetUsLittlePeople

Just wanted to,say if you’re British you’ll understand Mary Poppins as no Christmas can go past without this or Sound of Music. Another great podcast !

Great episode! Really enjoying all the reminiscing that goes on in the podcast. I grew up in the late 70’s & 80s so I’m right there with you on most of your favorites. My favorite Xmas toy ever was the Atari 2600, but before that it was Blip. Anybody remember that silly little toy/game?

Loved listening to Joel on the show. My favorite reruns of Bones are shows he’s on. And 72 year old nerd that I am, my favorite line Joel had on Chuck was “on a beach earning 20%.” Which means I love all 5 Die Hard Movies and Bruce Willis. And I do love Forever!

  8. BeaMarch 24th, 2015 at 6:51 pm

I also am sad that Tyler didn’t participate in this epsiode because I would love to hear who his celebrity crush was. Great episode and the story about Joel and Shannon Miller is hilarious. I tend to listen to the podcasts on my commute to work and this one had me laughing so much that I almost ran a red light. Solid entertainment, guys.
