A Fan’s Guide To Picking Favorites: Episode 55, Grimm Children’s Books to Film

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to the first podcast of 2016, “Picking Favorites” listeners! Apparently, this year, WE’Z GONNA GET CULTURED.  Because reading.  We’re also going to get a bit loose, if Kentucky talking about “cherry popping” and Razzle asking about porn stars (NOT THAT HE’D KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT) is any indication.  I say, LET’S GET WILD, KIDS.  BRING IN THE NSFW STAMP, I’M READY!  Oh, but don’t worry, the guys are still going to be the adorable baby animals we’ve come to know and love.  So let’s get crackin’!

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Nate Corddry! (@imnatecorddry)

You may know Nate best from his role as Gabriel on CBS’s “Mom” or his roles on “Children’s Hospital” or “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”. He’s also appeared in a number of movies, like St. Vincent and Heat, but you can catch him in the upcoming Ghostbusters remake, coming in July!  You can also hear Nate on his podcast on the Wolfpop network, “Reading Aloud”- you can find out more here!

Favorite Children’s Book:

While this topic has already been covered before… RULES? WHERE WE’RE GOING, WE DON’T NEED RULES.  Besides, you can’t bring in a READING podcast host and not ask him about READING, am I right?

Favorite Book Made Into A Film

There are times where the guys just HAVE to add their LEAST favorites, too, and this topic is one of them.  It’s like how sometimes you have to watch really bad movies just to laugh at them.  Listen, any topic that allows me to feature the Jurassic Park trailer is A-OK with me.

Bad- Cloud Atlas

Good- Silence of the Lambs

Good- Andromeda Strain

Bad- Sphere

Good- Jurassic Park

Good- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Extra Mentions:

Good- Manhunter

Bad- The Perfect Storm

Good- Friday Night Lights

Bad- The Lovely Bones

Good- Jaws

Good- The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

Good-To Kill A Mockingbird

The Revenant

Favorite Grimm’s Fairy Tale

Were there actual choices in this topic? If so, I must’ve missed it COMPLETELY, because there was much more discussion about Stephen King in the end.  So… Stephen King’s fairytales?

Extra Mentions:

Into The Woods

The Wiz

Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch

“Death of a Salesman” with Dustin Hoffman

The Brothers Grimm

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Random Notes From Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award is… NATE! Because he picked “A Wrinkle in Time” as his favorite book, and that’s mine, too.  MY RECAP, MY RULES, FOLKS.  Yes, I know that I said there were no rules earlier, but I’ve changed my mind.  You guys are just TOO UNRULY.
  • Whatever, Kentucky, the “Drunk Episode with Retta” is still my FAVORITE episode.  So I’M still listening.  (Although, I mean, if I continued to do the recaps and DIDN’T listen, things would get confusing, right?)
  • I had, honestly, a moral dilemma here, guys, since Razzle put up the challenge to include Sovereign (the porn star/writer) in the recap, because I WANTED TO INCLUDE HER AND RISE TO THE CHALLENGE… but then I ended up finishing my notes at work and that pretty much kiboshed the idea.  *sigh*
  • I mean, this isn’t a call to action or anything, but if people wanted to send in flip-flops to Earwolf with “Picking Favorites” or “Reading Aloud” written on them, I think that’d be awesome.  I’M JUST SAYING.
  • Kentucky’s mom recording the Disney stories on cassette tapes is the MOST ADORABLE THING I’VE EVER HEARD. Like, I got teary.  Shut up.
  • #TangledIsBetterThanFrozen
  • Grimm’s Fairy Tales are INCREDIBLE messed up.  There’s one about this couple that wants a baby, and they say that they’ll basically take a HEDGEHOG at this point, so they end up with a half-hedgehog and half-baby, and they like, keep him hidden behind their oven his whole life and somehow he survives and has an adventure and stuff.  But like, you can understand why Disney didn’t choose that one, right? Yeesh.
