A Fan’s Guide to Picking Favorites: Episode 46, Saved by the Scary 80s UK TV

Separator

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

And we’re back!  After a brief hiatus last week, our guys are back to answer the world’s most important questions: What’s the best “Saved By The Bell” Episode? How many concerts are TOO many?  And, of course, do women defecate when they give birth?  (I used a fancy word instead of “poop” so you can’t be grossed out.  Sorry, that’s the rules.)

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

April Richardson! (@apey)

April is a writer and comedian that you may know best from her multiple appearances on “@midnight”!  She is currently touring with Chris Hardwick on his “Funcomfortable” tour- check out the upcoming dates HERE.  You can also find her podcast, “Go Bayside!” HERE.  And finally, make sure to check out April’s website!

Here’s the picture of April and Mark-Paul Gosselaar from her Instagram.  LOOK AT IT, IT’S ADORABLE.

Favorite 80’s Band/Solo Artist From the UK

I think it’s universal knowledge that the UK totally does everything entertainment-related better than we do here in the States, so it’s no surprise that music is included in that statement.  Like, the bands mentioned here are only the TIP OF THE ICEBERG OF AWESOME.  Oh, the 80s.  You were the best.

April:

The Smiths

Razzle:

The Police

Kentucky:

The Eurythmics

Extra Mentions:

REM

Red Rocks Amphitheater

primary

The Cure

ABC- “The Lexicon of Love” Album

Joy Division

Def Leppard

The Clash

Siouxsie and the Banshees

As for who sold more records, Michael Jackson or Prince *pushes glasses higher on nose*:   According to the RIAA, it’s Michael Jackson by a long shot!  Michael has sold 76 million certified records (700 million claimed), while Prince has sold 39.5 million (150 million claimed). HOWEVER, Prince has had more of his records reach “gold” or “platinum” status than Michael Jackson has.

Prince- “Batdance”

Favorite Saved By The Bell Episode

WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING AND THE ALARM GIVES OUT A WARNING I DON’T THINK I’LL EVER MAKE IT ON TIME… man, this was a great category.  Unfortunately, there is a TOTAL lack of high-quality SBTB clips on YouTube, but I suggest that everyone somehow find these episodes online and watch them again.  Sidenote: there is a “Saved By The Bell” parody show in the Village here in NYC that I’ve seen (WITH Dustin Diamond, mind you) and it is just ridiculous (and super-dirty), so if you’re in the New York area, go check it out!

April:

“Screech’s Spaghetti Sauce”

sbtbMMMM

Razzle and Kentucky:

“Fake IDs”

Extra Mentions:

“Rockumentary” (sorry, TERRIBLE quality, but it had to be included)

“Save the Max”

“Earthquake!”

Favorite Creepy TV Show

That’s right, folks, it’s the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR (that’s right, I said it)- HALLOWEEN TIME!  Which obviously means that it’s time to talk about the scariest stuff in entertainment.  Now, I’m a bit surprised at the choices everyone made here with all of the super-creepy stuff that on nowadays, but to each their own, and I’m not fussed because YES.  ALL OF THE SCARY HALLOWEEN THINGS. GIVE IT.  YES.

April and Razzle:

“The Addams Family”

Kentucky:

“The Twilight Zone”

Extra Mentions:

“The Munsters”

“Mockingbird Lane”

“The Walking Dead”

“Twin Peaks”

“Tales From the Crypt”

“X-Files”

Three Men and a Baby “Ghost” (Keep an eye on the window as they leave the room)

Random Thoughts from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… KENTUCKY, which is sort of cheating because I’m pretty sure I’ve given him the award for being SO CAREFUL NOT TO OFFEND ANYONE multiple times before, but I just think it’s adorable.  I mean, there’s an added bonus of him being SO EXASPERATED by it now that makes it funny, too, but I like that he’s still trying.  Four for you, Kentucky.
  • I just want to say that when people ask me why I don’t have kids, I’m going to refer them to THIS EPISODE AND THE CONVERSATION ABOUT THE “SAVED BY THE BELL” EARTHQUAKE EPISODE.  BECAUSE THEY FAIL TO MENTION THIS STUFF WHEN EVERYONE’S TOO BUSY GOING ON ABOUT “THE MIRACLE OF LIFE”. I’M JUST SAYING.
  • While Razzle DID INDEED fulfill his Batman AND Tom Cruise quota for the episode, he did NOT mention an actress/singer that he currently has a crush on, so the Razzle Trifecta was not complete.  (Razzfecta?)
  • Okay, so here’s something I need to know: how often does Razzle ask Kentucky to make him t-shirts? I would wager that it’s at LEAST twice a week.  What do you guys think?
  • I love that April was Wednesday Adams for Halloween like twenty times in a row.  I mean, this is an A+ choice, really.
  • Can we all just agree that Morticia and Gomez Addams are basically the “Ultimate Marriage Goal” for everyone?
  • Whoever keeps saying that Kentucky and Razzle don’t like each other has clearly never had a brother OR a brother-type relationship because they fit that dynamic PERFECTLY.  I say, keep on giving each other a hard time, it’s totally entertaining.
  • April’s story about meeting Mark-Paul Gosselaar was the cutest, particularly because I TOTALLY FEEL HER about people you admire ACTUALLY KNOWING YOUR NAME (um, this podcast is a pretty good example, actually!).  SQUEE!
  • Don’t miss our dear Kentucky presenting at The Geekie Awards, streaming live at 6 PM PST TOMORROW NIGHT (October 15th) HERE.

Just a couple things of note; It’s not *The* Eurythmics, it’s just Eurythmics. And Morrissey has turned complaining into an art form. Other than that, April is my new internet crush. Not only is she smokin’ hot, but she’s got a potty mouth! And she knows a shitload about ’80s music (my high school soundtrack) And she was Wednesday Adams for Halloween. And she doesn’t like scary movies. If I had people, her agent would need to call them and set up a date….
