*The weird, ethereal “Heroes” music starts playing*

Where does it come from? This quest, this need to solve life’s mysteries when the simplest of life’s questions can never be answered.  Why are we here?  What is the soul? … what is your favorite Monty Python movie?

(If you’re a “Heroes” fan, you should be squealing right now, come on.)

Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast! Sorry for the delay in this one, guys, but I was actually up in Toronto, attending the “Heroes Reborn” world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival!  FANCY, right?

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

And don’t forget to tune into “Geeks Who Drink”, TONIGHT (Thursday) at 11PM on SyFy (and send a tweet to SyFy telling them how much you like the show)!

This Week’s Guest:

Judi Shekoni! (@judishekoni)

judishekoni

Judi is a gorgeous actress that you may know best as Zafrina from the Twilight saga.  She has also appeared on quite a bit of television in the UK, such as “EastEnders”, “Celebrity Love Island”, and on shows such as “Backstrom” and “NCIS” here in the States.  You can catch her (alongside Zac) as Joanne Collins in “Heroes Reborn”, which premieres on September 24th, 8pm, on NBC! TRUST ME, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!

“Heroes Reborn”

Favorite BBC Show

Remember that BBC song from Austin Powers? I sing that in my head every time someone mentions BBC. ANYWAY, I think we can all agree that the Brits know how to do some GOOD TELEVISION, right?  And Tyler’s right- those gorgeous accents make it a lot easier to disappear into the story, since we Americans get hypnotized by the dulcet tones of their proper (though not always, I suppose) accents.  WAIT, IS THAT THEIR SECRET?!

Judi:

“EastEnders”

Tyler:

“Black Mirror”

Kentucky:

“The Young Ones”

Zac:

“The Office”

Extra Mentions:

“Coronation Street”

“Days of Our Lives” (US show)

“Peaky Blinders”

“Doctor Who”

“Sherlock”

Favorite British Actor

You know that things are SERIOUS when a good chunk of American character roles are going to British actors, just because they’ve got the acting thing down pat.  How many times have you been told, like, “Oh, the guy/girl who plays that character on an American TV show? He’s British” and been like, WHAT?!??! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!  Share the talent wealth, you Brits.

Judi:

Emma Thompson

Kentucky:

Alec Guinness

Zac:

Gary Oldman

Tyler:

Bill Nighy (start this at about 1:15 in to get to his part)

Extra Mentions:

Timothy Dalton

Benedict Cumberbatch

Favorite British Film

I’m so glad that this topic ended in a whole lot of Monty Python love, as it should.  But of COURSE they’re great at film-making.  IS THERE ANYTHING THAT ANYONE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY OVER THERE CAN’T DO?  I mean, it wasn’t enough to make far superior candy?  You’re making us look bad.

Judi:

Love Actually

Zac:

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels

Tyler:

Withnail & I

Kentucky:

RocknRolla

Extra Mentions:

Snatch

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Hunter Thompson)

Wayne’s World 2 Del Preston Scene

The Meaning of Life Grim Reaper Scene

Monty Python & The Holy Grail Knight Scene

Monty Python & The Holy Grail Son and Father Scene

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award is… ZAC!  I mean, OBVIOUSLY, after he recited that scene from Wayne’s World II so perfectly AND followed that by saying he couldn’t recite any Shakespeare for the life of him.  But then apparently he also had to quote half of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, too.  I was on the plane when I first listened to this episode and he nailed the voice Prince Herbert SO WELL that I laughed really loud and scared the people around me.  BRAVO, SIR ZACHARY OF LEVI.
  • I am so glad that Zac mentioned Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Hunter S. Thompson because they are, respectively, my favorite movie and the most influential author on my OWN writing, ever.  Neither are everyone’s cup of tea, but PLEASE seek out some of Hunter Thompson’s writing, he’s a genius.  Plus, I think it was Johnny Depp’s SECOND best performance in his lifetime so far.
  • I also agree that Cumberbatch’s voice is basically an awesome gift to the world- I blast the volume whenever Smaug is on while watching The Hobbit movies because IT IS JUST SO COOL.  My living room SHAKES.
  • “I love Snatch, too.” OH TYLER.
  • Emma Thompson is queen of the universe, and if you don’t agree, I just don’t know what to say to you.
  • I think the ability to do multiple accents WELL is the coolest thing. It’s totally a superpower.  At the same time, I could HEAR the ovaries of Zac fangirls exploding during this episode.  Are you guys okay? Anyone need to be hosed down?
  • I gotta give a quick shout-out to Razzle, who was out this week: we missed you, buddy! There was such a LACK of Batman! Come back soon!

Awesome recap as usual … and I have to say I REALLY enjoyed this episode (not only because I’m British!) … Zac did a fantastic job with the English accents!
