A Fans Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 4, TV Heroes vs. Villains

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Once again, IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR “Picking Favorites” RECAP ON!  Every week, this is the place to find the topics, choices, and my own personal thoughts of each podcast episode.  Sometimes entertaining and sometimes just plain stupid, it’s here so you might as well just read it, okay?

You can find the episode on both iTunes and Soundcloud.

The special guest this week was none other than the amazing and gorgeous RETTA!

Guys, I really love Retta.  No, you don’t understand, I ADORE Retta.  Not only is she endlessly hilarious as Donna on “Parks & Recreation” (which STILL doesn’t have an official premiere date for its upcoming final season and I miss it dearly), but I was lucky enough to be a part of the audience of the “Bad-Ass Women” panel at Nerd HQ and got to see how truly awesome Retta is in person.  If you haven’t yet, go watch that panel here RIGHT THIS MINUTE.  It was one of the best panels in the history of HQ and all of the women on it were incredible and inspiring.  And it made me REALLY love Retta.  Like, a lot.

(Clearly.)

I switched it up a bit this week and stuck with pictures ONLY (no YouTube clips), because I didn’t want to accidentally show any spoilers for any of the shows mentioned. I’m nothing if not understanding of nerd culture, folks.

Onto the topics!

 Favorite TV Heroes

I really enjoyed the conversations that came out of the topics this week, particularly about how a lot of these characters sort of balance precariously on the hero/villain line.  But, since “Scandal” is brought up multiple times, I want to take this opportunity to recommend that EVERYONE read Retta’s tweets (she’s at @unfoRETTAble on Twitter) about that show because they are pretty much the best thing ever.  Like, even if you don’t watch the show.  Priceless.  (Have you guys realized that this week’s recap is basically just a Retta lovefest?  I have no regrets about this.)

Retta:

Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), “Parks & Recreation”

Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), “Scandal”

Favorite TV Villains

I have a thing for villains, it’s weird.  Like, I really want to see EVERY character that I ever like turn evil, even if it’s just temporarily.  I’m hoping that it comes from my desire for interesting, conflicted characters, and not from some strange, dark part of my head that is waiting for an idle moment to take over and turn my eyes black or something.  Or, y’know, it might be that I watched a lot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” back in the day and pretty much EVERYONE turned evil at some point on that show, so… either way, villains are awesome.

Retta:

Gaius Baltar (James Callis), “Battlestar Galactica”

Paulie G (Lance Barber),“The Comeback”

Rowan Pope (Joe Morton), “Scandal”

Shane Vendrell(Walter Goggins), “The Shield”

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • Oh my god, Tyler.  TYLER LABINE.  YOU ARE AN ADORABLE, HILARIOUS DRUNK.  What I love about this week’s episode is that you can literally listen to Tyler’s gradual descent into drunkness, and it is HILARIOUS.  Like, it starts with him just singing softly in the background, then escalates to him lamenting lengthily about the plight of Jack Gleeson (the actor who plays Joffrey in “Game of Thrones”)/no one watching “Twin Peaks”, then to pretty much just wanting to know everything EVER about Retta, and ending with him mouth-farting into the microphone while STILL needing to know everything about Retta.   I loved every minute.
  • This Week’s Winner of the “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award: It was a both a tough choice and a not-so-tough choice.  The tough part would’ve been that under other circumstances, I would’ve had to pick between Dave (for being chivalrous and letting the lady of the group give her choices first) or Tyler (because he had me in tears from laughing).  HOWEVER, Retta was the guest.  And she is SUPREMELY awesome, so she wins automatically.  Plus, she was the first female guest! REPRESENT!
  • Tyler: “….did I get weird?”  I swear to god, I laughed so hard, my soul departed my body like the weasels from Roger Rabbit.
  • I’m intrigued about Retta’s fondness for Italian men.  I mean, I’m pretty damn fond of Italian FOOD, but I mainly just prefer my men tall and spectacularly-legged.  More importantly, does she watch “The Mindy Project”?  Because Danny Castellano is the BEST representation of Italian men from Staten Island/Jersey that I have ever seen.
  • I love that Tyler wants to slap Joffrey SPECIFICALLY in a Whole Foods, because nothing sets the mood for violence like organic produce.
  • God, I just… I really love Retta.  SHE WAS PRE-MED AND THEN JUST DECIDED TO DO STAND-UP, YOU GUYS.  THIS GIRL IS BRILLIANT ON A LEVEL I CAN’T EVEN COMPREHEND.  I’ll just sit here, fangirling.
  • Tequila got banned.  I am legitimately sad about this development.  Say it ain’t so, Zac!  SAY IT AIN’T SO.

That’s it for this week! Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast to support the guys, and tweet YOUR favorites with the hashtag #PickingFavorites to @thenerdmachine!  Thanks for reading… until next time!

Finally. A woman on the podcast. I haven’t listened, yet, but your recap reveals some very interesting choices from Retta. The choice of Callis’s Gaius Baltar–sorry, Shannon, you misspelled the name–shows she’s a real nerd. Great choice and worthy of a podcast that has “nerd” in the title.

Frankly, the guys’ choices aren’t nearly as interesting as Retta’s were.
