A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 39, Barely Lethal

Cruisin’ down the street in my recap…

I don’t think it’s necessary to add anything else, do you?

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

And don’t forget to tune into “Geeks Who Drink”, Thursday nights at 11PM on SyFy (and send a tweet to SyFy telling them how much you like the show)!

This Week’s Guest:

Kyle Newman! (@kyle_newman)

Kyle Newman is the FIRST returning guest of “Picking Favorites”! You may remember him way back from Episode 7.  Kyle is a director, producer, and writer, not to mention a new father for the second time (congrats!) and the husband of actress Jaime King.  He has directed music videos (“Style”, Taylor Swift), films (Fanboys), and seems like he’s about to do quite a bit more television in the future, even though he couldn’t talk about it on the show! You can catch Kyle latest movie, Barely Lethal, on Amazon Prime or on DVD now.  Also, check out the Star Wars radio drama he wrote and directed, “Smuggler’s Gambit”!

Stuff That Kentucky and Razzle Talked About

Once again, the guys were all riled up enough about a TV show to throw the usual set-up of the show to the wind and get to what was really on their minds this week.  Well, and to argue about biblical/religious names and their popularity, but then Razzle and Kentucky always do seem to surprise us, don’t they?  Nevertheless, take a look at the many topics that were discussed this week… and watch out for those “True Detective” spoilers!

Favorite Samuel L. Jackson Movie

We only got one category out of this episode, but man, is it a GOOD one!  First, the only thing that you need to know is that Samuel L. Jackson’s scene in Deep Blue Sea (below) is a CINEMATIC TRIUMPH.  NO OTHER SCENE WILL EVER COMPARE.  Second, I will say “this party’s OVER”, a line of Samuel L. Jackson’s (you have to ALWAYS use his full name, that’s the rules) from the prequels of a popular sci-fi trilogy that we are all supposed to pretend never happened, as much as possible.

This party’s OVER.

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award is… KYLE NEWMAN.  I don’t usually give the award to the guest, but you know what? He fought for years to get a teenage, female-driven, action comedy out into the world and made it happen, so that makes me want to give him a slow clap, okay?  BRAVO, SIR.
  • How adorable is Razzle when he mentions Tom Cruise? He turns into such a fangirl, I LOVE IT.
  • Sorry, Razzle, but since people seem to be all excited about knowing your real name, let’s reveal it: Eric Gwizdala.  And although you don’t seem to like it, sir, I think it’s quite fun! (Because nobody beats the Gwiz.) (… I’ll see myself out.)
  • I got a really big kick out of Razzle’s “bully voice”.  Do all internet bullies sound like the brother on “Everybody Loves Raymond”?  God, I hope so.
  • How dare Kentucky go to New Orleans on vacation and not bring back beignets for the rest of us?
  • I apologize for the beginning of this recap. Like, I’m not really THAT sorry, because it made me laugh because I’m a HORRENDOUS nerd, but I’m a little sorry that you guys have to put up with my ridiculousness. But only a LITTLE.

That’s it for this week’s recap! Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send YOUR favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”!

The argument about how to pronounce “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” reminded me of the ESPN commercials with Peyton and Eli Manning goofing off in the ESPN studios (they’re both NFL football quarterbacks…and brothers…and…oh, just look for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_QW63tmTuc) But seriously…”L.L. Cool Jay is not LLLLLLL Cool Jay”. BWAHAHAHA!
