A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 36, Raptors and Band Flicks

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

So this might be fixed eventually, but I want to let everyone know (sorry, TNM, I’m calling you out a bit but this is hilarious) that as of right now, this episode is named “Raptors and Band Flicks”.  I believe it’s SUPPOSED to be “Rappers and Band Flicks”, but guys, I was so confused when I saw the title because I was like, “Are they going to pick their favorite raptors? How is this going to work?  Are there more raptors out there in pop culture than just in Jurassic Park, because if so, I need to be notified immediately.”

And, let’s be honest, EVERYONE’S favorite raptor would be Blue from Jurassic World.

No contest, am I right?

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Walter May! (@WalterCMay)

(This is his Twitter picture, sorry. Seriously, I couldn’t find any other photos of the guy! That’s the problem with being BEHIND the camera all the time, I guess!)

Walter is a director and producer of many commercials, music videos, and other stuff.  Remember Trailer Park Heroes?  He directed that!  He’s also directed some of Katy Perry’s videos, and will have a documentary about her Superbowl Half-Time performance released soon.  In the meantime, you can check out Walter’s stuff on his website.

“I Hope This Gets To You”- The Daylights (co-written by Walter, too!)

Favorite Rapper

Since there was no female representation on the show today and when that happens I feel like it’s my job to interject, I AM INTERJECTING.  Well, no, I’m not, since the show is already recorded.  So I’m MAKING A VERY LOUD COMMENT AFTER THE FACT! My very loud comment is this: MISSY ELLIOTT.  Okay, I’m done.  Can I hashtag this “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves”?

Ice Cube

Extra Mentions:

Will Smith- “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”

Straight Outta Compton (NOTE: Yes, the tank thing really happened- the LA chief of police at the time, Daryl Gates, was given access to a “ramming tank” which was used to break down the doors/destroy suspected crack houses and drug dealers’ homes in South Central.  The tank, however, ended up destroying many houses of the innocent during its use, too.)

Public Enemy

Tesla Model S “Ludicrous Mode”

Favorite Musician-Turned-Actor

FRANK SINATRA. FRANK SINATRA, FRANK SINATRA, FRANK SINATRA.  God, I love Sinatra.  Anyway, is this even a thing anymore? I feel like everyone jumps from musician to actor and back again whenever they want, nowadays.  Thanks, auto-tune!  Also, regardless of what you think about her music, the fact that Barbra Streisand wasn’t even mentioned?!  C’maaaahhhnnnn, guys!

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg, but also…

Justin Timberlake

Jared Leto Ice-T

Extra Mentions:

Steven Van Zandt

Dwight Yoakam

Mark Wahlberg Workout Video

Frank Sinatra

David Bowie

Jared Leto

Jennifer Lopez

Mos Def/Yasiin Bey

Favorite Movies About Bands

You know when you love a movie, but then you completely forget about its existence, and then someone mentions it and you’re like, “HOLY CRAP, YES! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!” That’s exactly how I felt when the guys mentioned Airheads.  Anyway, I feel like there was an influx of band movies in the 90s, and now we don’t get them quite as much anymore.  I mean, that Jem and the Holograms movie is coming, but I don’t know how I feel about that.  Be careful with my childhood, Hollywood.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

The Doors

This is Spinal Tap

Extra Mentions:

Van Halen, “Jump”- Year: 1984

The Pointer Sisters, “Jump”- Year: 1983

Encino Man

Vanilla Ice

Brian “The Boz” Bosworth

Back to the Future

Empire Records

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… honestly, I’m tempted to give it to Walter’s mom, but we’ll give it to KENTUCKY!  I think he might be the leader of winning this award, but CAN YOU REALLY BLAME ME? Like, look at him all defending women from the treacherous B-word. LEARN FROM KENTUCKY, MEN OF THE WORLD.
  • Speaking of, poor Kentucky got DEEE-NIED by Walter and Razzle.  Aw, his poor little “FINE, I won’t PICK Jared Leto, then!”  GIVE HIM A BREAK, GUYS, IF HE LIKES JARED LETO, HE CAN LIKE JARED LETO.
  • I feel like, in every episode, Razzle makes a checklist of three things that he has to get into the podcast. 1) A mention of Batman, 2) A request to get his favorite actor on the show, and 3) A mention of an actress he has a crush on.
  • To make up for my disappointment in the lack of raptors in this episode, can we have a Favorite Dinosaur category? Not only would that be awesome, but you know all the guys would turn into, like, first grade boys about it and it’d be adorable.
  • More ads with Kentucky and Razzle, please (i.e. LootCrate).  THEY CRACK ME UP.
