A Fan’s Guide to Picking Favorites, Episode 35: Monster Keanu Heist Movies

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

And we’re back! Yes, folks, life has returned to normal after Nerd HQ and San Diego Comic-Con.  Whomp, whomp.  But we can nurse our post-con blues with “Picking Favorites” and its adorable, baby-animal-esque hosts.  Well, except for Tyler and Zac (or, I suppose, “Chuck”, at least in this episode), because they live movie-star lives where “back to normal” means being whisked away to film in exotic locales. Like Canada.

But hey!  Remember to tune into “Geeks Who Drink” on SyFy, Thursday nights at 11PM!  Also, If you missed the first episode with Eric Christian Olsen and Scott Porter, you can buy it on Amazon for FREE right here.  Don’t forget to send a tweet to SyFy telling them how much you like the show!

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Dave Waite! (@davewaitecomedy)

Dave is a touring comedian that you may have caught on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” or “Last Comic Standing”.  He also hosts/co-produces “The Secret Show”, a monthly comedy night in Culver City, California.  He also happens to be Razzle’s roommate (awwww!).

You can find Dave’s comedy album, “Hotdoggin'” on iTunes here.  If you’re interested in attending “The Secret Show” (there’s a special show at Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles on August 18th), email barbersecretshow@gmail.com.  Otherwise, you can find more info and tour dates on Dave’s website.

Favorite Keanu Reeves Movie

Keanu Reeves’ career is a bit of a miracle, isn’t it? Like, for a guy who made himself known as a dumb, stereotypical “surfer dude”, he’s done incredibly well, right?  YOU GO, KEANU.  Has anyone seen him in Babes in Toyland? My sister and I LOVED that movie, and need to thank Keanu for helping us learn how to spell “Cincinnati”.  I still sing the song when I have to spell it (yes, Keanu SINGS in the movie).

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

John Wick

Extra Mentions:

Genghis Khan (here’s a history lesson)

Circle K

Jack Reacher

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Matrix

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Near Dark

What We Do In The Shadows (GO. WATCH. THIS. MOVIE. IMMEDIATELY.  It is the FUNNIEST movie I think I’ve ever seen)

Favorite Monster Movie

I got really excited when I saw “Monster” in the title of this episode, because I’ve wanted the guys to do “Favorite Movie Monster” since DAY ONE, folks.  Now, it ended up NOT being that category, but I’m okay with it- clearly, our psychic connections must’ve been messed up.  It happens.  Also, if you immediately thought of Monsters, Inc. when you heard the category, please know that I love you.

The Thing

Extra Mentions:

Professional Surfer Mick Fanning Getting Attacked By Shark During Live, Televised Competition (don’t worry, he’s completely fine!)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (and here’s Freddy Krueger’s origin story)

Alien: Isolation

“Trailer Park Heroes”

Favorite Heist Movie

I’m trying to control my disbelief at The Usual Suspects not being ANYONE’S favorite in this category, so let’s instead focus on how Dave is in EXTRA trouble because he chose the REMAKE of Ocean’s Eleven instead of the original with freakin’ Frank Sinatra (I would’ve groupie-d him SO HARD if I was alive back in the 50’s and 60’s) and the rest of the Rat Pack.  The remake is pretty good, don’t get me wrong, but THE RAT PACK, Dave. THE. RAT PACK.  (Yes, I know he’s entitled to his opinion, but if he’s allowed to think that vampires are for chicks, I’m allowed to think that he should sit in time-out for choosing the remake over the original, you know?)

Ocean’s Eleven (the remake)

Dog Day Afternoon

A Fish Called Wanda

Reservoir Dogs

Extra Mentions:

Ocean’s Thirteen

The Town

Usual Suspects

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • This week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… RAZZLE! Purely for his Ghost Dad joke about Bill Cosby.  Like, that joke gets major slow-clap to standing ovation from me.  Bravo, sir.
  • I’m about THISCLOSE to putting a new section in the recaps called “Brought to you by the Kentucky Department of Tourism” because they’re getting to the point where the state of Kentucky should be sending them at LEAST an Edible Arrangement or something.  Please note that if this happens, I will be including a link to “Dueling Banjos” in this new section because that’s what I hear in my head when they start talking about Kentucky.  *whistles innocently*
  • I will forever love Kentucky (the person, not the state… not that there’s anything WRONG with the state of Kentucky, you know) for his PC-ness and sensitivity and all-around awesomeness.  (We DID, by the way, meet at Nerd HQ and it was wonderful.  Alas, I didn’t get to meet Razzle, but I DID get to see him dance with blind enthusiasm to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” at the HQ Dance Party, which is pretty magical all on its own.)
  • Dave, re: “Chuck”- “What happened in the last episode, I didn’t see it.”  I heard the gasps of every “Chuck” fan when he said this, and I FEEL YOU, guys.  I FEEL YOU.
  • I didn’t actually LIKE Mad Max: Fury Road, and it’s so beloved by so many people that I’m beginning to wonder if maybe something is wrong with my brain.  It clearly must be warped in some way, because EVERYONE loves it and I thought it was just “meh”.  I’m calling the doctor.

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send YOUR favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”!

I was laughing uncontrollably from before this episode properly started!
And loved that Dave Waite was so sad that “Chuck” wasn’t there! And prepared to ask for swag … 🙂
