A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 31, The Game of Thrones Call-In Episode

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Well, it’s time for another fan call-in episode, folks!  And not just ANY fan call-in episode, but a GAME OF THRONES one, since David Kentucky ‘Murica Bias ???? was having some MAJOR FEELS about the latest episode of the hit HBO show! For those of us who either don’t watch or aren’t caught up to the latest episode, well… we’re just sit here and look confused, yet pretty, okay?

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

I’m switching up the recap format a bit this week, because to be honest, I was a bit perplexed as to HOW to recap this without 1) having to put tons of “Spoiler Alert” warnings all over it, and 2) knowing ANYTHING about the current season of GoT because I’m only partway through season 2.  That being said, this recap SHOULD be pretty spoiler-free, for those of you who skipped the episode so as not to be spoiled.  I’ve noted under each call what the subject matter was, but not gone into full detail about the discussion.  Sound good?  Here we go! (And as always, you lucky-duck callers, please let me know if I’ve misspelled your name and I’ll fix it immediately!)

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” award goes to… ZAC!  I was really impressed with his eloquence when speaking about how he doesn’t think watching “Game of Thrones” goes against his belief system or values.  Actually, kudos should be given to EVERYONE, including the caller, Tim, and Kentucky, because they handled a touchy subject matter very maturely and eloquently.  TAKE NOTE, internet! THIS is how you have an adult conversation about differences of opinion!
  • I’m really fighting the urge to add another award to my notes here: The “Precious Baby Animal” Award.  Really, it wouldn’t be fair because Razzle would probably win it almost every week.  He kills me.  His little, “Zac… I miss you” was just the cutest, and you guys know I love it when Razzle sings.  RAZZLE IS A GIFT THAT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS.
  • There have been many moments in life when I have been proud of Zac, but never as much as I was when he proved he knew every word to the “Gummi Bears” theme song.
  • They snuck in a little Nerd HQ announcement in this episode, for those who missed it: LootCrate will have a presence at Nerd HQ this year!  Check them out- my husband got their box last month and absolutely loved it!
  • Did anyone else catch Zac’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference (“It’s a MAAANN!!”), because I did and laughed really, really hard.
  • What does it say about me that I almost NEVER question logic in movies?  I’m literally just like, “WHEEEE, PRETTY COLORS, GET IN MY EYEBALLS!”
  • I have to quickly add my one issue with “Game of Thrones” and it’s why I’m still only on season 2 of the show: I CANNOT binge-watch it.  Like, so many AWFUL things happen on the show to characters that I care about, that I just get depressed after, like, two episodes, and then I have to go watch a cartoon or something.  The show’s not for shiny, happy people, I’ll tell you that.
  • NERD HQ IS IN LESS THAN A MONTH, GUYS! I’ll be there, so if any of you reading this will be as well, make sure you say hi!
  • To everyone who basically answered with crickets chirping every time sports was mentioned… gosh, I just love you.

Although I don’t watch Game of Thrones (yet! I’ve started reading the first book, tho) I really enjoyed this episode, mostly because of how Zac and Kentucky answered that question about Christianity. Being a person of faith myself, I really liked to hear that aspect as well. I’m proud of you guys.
Also, thanks for mentioning Halt and Catch Fire! It’s such an awesome show and I love it and it is great to hear that you do too!
Sadly I cannot be at HQ (although I really REALLY want to) but I’ll be watching all the streams!
Keep going my cuddly little nerds.
