A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 28, Spielberg Wrestler NES Game

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast!  Our line-up changes again this episode: Tyler has left us again, off to be a big ol’ fancy movie star, but we got Kentucky back (and in rare form, too)!  And I mean, we DO have a Zach on the podcast… just not of the Levi variety.  Also, we are treated to one of my FAVORITE and most DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE TOPICS EVER!  YEAH! DO YOU SMELL WHAT THIS RECAP IS COOKING?!?  WELL, I CAN’T COOK VERY WELL SO IT PROBABLY SMELLS PRETTY BAD SO SORRY ABOUT THAT, WE SHOULD’VE JUST ORDERED OUT.

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Zachary Knighton! (@ZachKnighton)

As Kentucky mentioned, you may know Zach best from his time on the ABC show “Happy Endings”, or his most recent role as Stosh on “Weird Loners” (which, unfortunately, was very recently cancelled).  He’s also appeared on “FlashForward”, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, and “Parenthood”.  Zach also appears in the movie Ashby, which is currently appearing at film festivals, and should be released sometime in the next year.  There’s no trailer yet, but keep an eye out for it!  In the meantime, you can follow Zach on Instagram or catch “Weird Loners” on Hulu!

Favorite Wrestler:

I have to admit that I don’t understand the appeal of wrestling.  I’m not hating, promise, but looking up the below clips made me further confused.  But hey- lots of people wouldn’t understand my ability to sit watching fish swim around an aquarium for hours on end, so to each their own!  But please note that I know literally less-than-nothing about wrestling, so I’m not even sure I got the right clips below. LISTEN, I DID MY BEST, OKAY?!

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper

The Rock

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin

Extra Mentions:

They Live

Famous “Bubblegum” Quote from They Live

Hulk Hogan

A Face in the Crowd

Ric Flair

Dusty Rhodes, “The American Dream”

Andre the Giant

Stone Cold Steve Austin on “Chuck”

Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant

Royal Rumble

Ultimate Warrior

Favorite NES Game:

NES, to this day, is the video game system that I’ve played the most in my life-apparently, anything higher than 8-bit was just too much for me.  It was the reason (well, I suppose Mario was, more than the system- JUMP, FOR GOD’S SAKE, YOU TINY PLUMBER) I yelled a curse word for the first time.  So I join the guys in their nostalgic adoration for the system and its games.  Just remember to blow into the cartridge before you put it in. (… that’s what she said.)

The Legend of Zelda

Tecmo Superbowl

Megaman II

Extra Mentions:

The Goonies 2

Commodore 64 The Goonies

Super Mario Bros 3

Kid Icarus

Friday the 13th

Favorite Steven-Spielberg-Directed Movie:

This is it, folks.  There are very few topics chosen on the podcast for which I simply CANNOT choose a favorite, and this is one of them.  I think my indecision stems from the fact that I have discovered so much of Spielberg’s stuff relatively recently, so I don’t have nostalgia to aid in my choice.  I mean, I only watched Raiders and Jaws for the very first time two years ago.  But there are VERY IMPORTANT MOVIES THAT ARE MISSING FROM THIS LIST.  I clearly have intense emotions about it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Saving Private Ryan

Extra Mentions:

E.T. in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and Yoda in E.T. (Do they come from the same universe?!)

Star Wars Trailer- Darth Vader Mask vs. One-Eyed Willie Similarities

Schindlers List

Empire of the Sun

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award is… KENTUCKY!! Not just because we missed him on the past few episodes, but because he was both hilarious and adorable in this episode.  I feel like he came back from his absence with a whole lot of sass in his back pocket, particularly for Razzle.  I loved it.  I also particularly loved that the MEANEST joke he had for Razzle was that he “never made out with a girl”.  Like, that’s the highest on the mean scale Kentucky can go.  My heart is literally GLOWING from how endearing that is.  And he clearly had a dirty joke in mind later on and JUST COULD NOT GO THROUGH WITH IT.  Kentucky, I missed you.
  • Speaking of adorable, how cute was Razzle while singing the “Megaman” theme?  He was so excited! What an adorable little meerkat.
  • While I still don’t really get the wrestling stuff, I do have to say that I am all for men in kilts.  More men in kilts, I say.
  • “It’s called ‘Picking Favorites’, that’s the WHOLE IDEA OF THE SHOW.” KENTUCKY IS SO DONE WITH RAZZLE’S MULTIPLE CHOICES.  And his affinity for grossness/lewdness, too, since he was all “REALLY?” about Razzle’s “popping your cherry” comment.  THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET BLEEPED THE WEEK BEFORE, GUYS.  Kentucky comes back and BRINGS DOWN THE HAMMER.  Yep, Kentucky is Thor.
  • Zach, re: Tyler making the theme song- “How did he do it? Did he push some buttons on a thing?”
  • I felt very… not right… including Schindler’s List on this recap.  Like, it’s a great movie, but nothing THAT horrific and sad should be included in my shiny, happy recaps, you know what I mean? Yeesh.
  • Since Razzle mentioned it, be sure to check out David Letterman’s LAST appearance as host of “The Late Show” TONIGHT (Wednesday, May 20th) at 11:35 PM on CBS.  But as for Worldwide Pants sending Razzle some advertising payment, they can join the long list of companies that owe Razzle some kickback (Little Caesar’s, Edge of Tomorrow, Tim Burton’s Batman, etc.from his repeated mentions on the podcast.

i’m with you, shans, i don’t get the whole wrestling thing. i do, however, LOVE me some Spielberg movies!!! i love that they brought up “Empire of the Sun”! and yes, one of the “parents” are back in the form of Kentucky, but Razzle’s a little too comfortable with the “no holds barred” podcasting when the “kids” were left in charge. you just wait until your father gets home…!
