A Fan’s Guide To “Picking Favorites”: Episode 27, Cooking Sneakers to Kill Time

Welcome back to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast! Well, since Zac and Kentucky are away being busy little bees (and, in Zac’s case, possibly being a BAD-ASS VILLAIN), Tyler and Razzle are still holding down the fort.  Or, y’know, really earning the episode’s NSFW rating, but hey! At least they’re keeping us entertained, right? (Love you guys!)

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Thomas Middleditch! (@middleditch)

You most likely know Thomas best as Richard Hendriks on the popular series “Silicon Valley” on HBO, but he’s also appeared in multiple movies, like Wolf of Wall Street and Someone Marry Barry (with our own Tyler Labine!) and is a touring stand-up comedian.  If you’re in the LA area, you can catch Thomas at UCB Franklin for “The Extreme Gaming Championship“, or you can watch him play some video games over on his Twitch account.

You can also watch Silicon Valley on HBO, Sundays at 10PM, or on HBOGo.

Favorite Shoe/Sneaker

I am definitely not a shoe person (flip-flops, all the way!) and much prefer comfort over style, but there is something quite nice about finding a pair of stylish and comfy sneaks.  Which reminds me, is it just a tri-state area thing to call them “sneakers”, because almost everyone else I’ve met outside of my area calls them “tennis shoes”.  And, I mean, SORRY, rest of the world, but that makes no sense because you can play FAR MORE than tennis in sneakers.  So…. there.

Favorite Way To Kill Time

I am FLOORED that this topic didn’t dissolve into the boys giggling and making up innuendos because, I mean, come on.  But this IS The Nerd Machine, which means that talking about video games will pretty much triumph over all… much to Tyler chagrin, I’m sure.

Favorite Thing to Cook

Why is it that EVERY time I either don’t have time to eat or just forget altogether that food is one of the topics on the podcast?  Also, can we all agree that Tyler is SO FANCY when it comes to food? Like, just look at the wording in each of the guys’ choices.  LOOK AT TYLER’S.  He is Fancy Food Man.

 Random Notes From Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award is… TYLER! Because shoes are JUST the worst.  Barefoot five!  Also, because HE HAD TO GET BLEEPED THIS WEEK.  I’m amused and, oddly, a little proud.
  • I have to nitpick at something for a second here: buying lots of shoes/being interested in shoes is SO not a “feminine” thing.  How do I know this? Not only does my husband have twice the amount of shoes that I do, but I also work right next to a popular sneaker store in a very traffic-heavy part of New York City.  When new Jordans or whatever sneaker goes on sale, there is a line made up of 99% men wrapped around the block.  So clearly, an obsession/appreciation for shoes isn’t gender-specific, a-thank-you-very-much.
  • I love that Razzle and Tyler essentially referred to Zac and Kentucky as “the parents”, because it’s so true.  This episode was the equivalent of the cops breaking up a party that some kids threw because their parents were out of town.  I feel like we’ll have a very special episode soon that involves Zac and Kentucky sitting Tyler and Razzle down for a serious talk with emotional music in the background, à la “Full House”.
  • GUYS, BIG HERO 6 IS SO CUTE.  You need to watch it if you haven’t yet.
  • Hiking is a BIG “I am a beautiful specimen of Californian living” thing, isn’t it?
  • I loved Tyler’s giggle that he couldn’t control at the end of the episode.  Adorable.

Definitely would love to hear that “special episode” where Zac & Kentucky have a little “parent” talk with the “kids”….lol Please, please! Thanks for the great recap, as usual, Shannon!

this weeks podcast has truly set the roles for the crew: zac is the moral compass, ‘murica is the “dad”, poor razzle is the “little brother” (his struggle to break into the video game conversation, and tyler and thomas just steamrolled right over what he was trying to say), and tyler is the kid in the back of the classroom who throws stuff when the teacher’s back is turned.
